Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic, reliable, highly motivated diagnostic radiographers to join our large, friendly team at UHS. This vacancy is for HCPC registered radiographers, and summer 2025 graduate radiographers looking to develop. Proposed start date for this vacancy is for Summer 2025.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a department we offer a 14 week preceptorship programme to ensure that all new members of staff are supported and supervised until all the required competencies are achieved. We also offer a Band 5-6 transition programme upon application and successful appointment. The aim of this preceptorship is to help band 5 radiographers develop their skills and demonstrate their ability to work as a band 6 allowing them to move to the next pay band if successful.
 
What you’ll do:
The successful candidate will rotate through all areas of the department as outlined above. Adopting a patient centred approach; you will be part of the team providing imaging for all patient groups. Ability to participate in the full shift roster which covers the provision of 24 hour diagnostic Radiography services 365 days per year is essential.
 
What we’re looking for:
Patient focused, proactive and ideally with NHS experience. We welcome applicants who hold a BSc or equivalent in Diagnostic Radiography, are Health and Care Professions Council registered and eligible to work in the United Kingdom. Applications are welcomed from current 3rd year BSc Diagnostic Radiography students.
 
Our specialist areas include Trauma and Orthopaedic Radiography, General and Neurology inpatient and Outpatient Radiography, Fluoroscopy, Theatres, and Interventional Radiology. Our busy Interventional Unit carries out a wide range of vascular, non-vascular and interventional oncology procedures and is the regional cancer centre and major vascular hub.
 
The Trust’s Managed Equipment Service contract ensures a planned and guaranteed equipment replacement programme with managed maintenance and repair; this ensures we always work with the latest up to date technology.
Across the departments you will be working in, there are:
· Xograph Triathlon T3 Precision DR rooms
· Planmeca Promax dental imaging rooms
· Siemens Artis Zee Multi-purpose fluoroscopy rooms
· Siemens Interventional Radiology Labs (Axiom Artis, Artis Zee)
· Siemens Artis Pheno Hybrid Theatre
· Large fleet of image intensifiers (Cios Flow, Cios Select, Ziehm Solo, Ziehm Vision R and 3D)
· Large fleet of DR mobiles
 
At UHS we have a large friendly team of radiographers with wide range of experience working across the following departments:
 
Main X-ray:
This area provides general, fluoroscopy and mobile radiography for adult in-patients and out-patients. There are 5 DR X-ray rooms, 2 state of the art digital fluoroscopy rooms, and a fleet of DR mobiles. There is also a Xograph DR Dental Imaging room.
 
Emergency X-ray:
This area provides adult and paediatric trauma radiography for the Emergency Department and Major Trauma Centre plus emergency and general theatre imaging. There are 3 DR x-ray rooms, DR mobiles and a fleet of up-to-date image intensifiers undertaking a wide variety of complex imaging procedures.
 
Interventional Radiology:
Our interventional Unit carries out a wide range of complex vascular, non-vascular and oncology procedures in 2 Siemens interventional labs in additional to a Hybrid Lab. The unit is the cancer centre and major vascular hub within the region.
 
Royal South Hants X-ray:
This satellite unit, near the city centre, provides imaging for adult outpatient clinics and GP referrals and has 4 DR x-ray rooms.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Appropriate BSc Radiography degree or qualification to be achieved in the next nine months
  • HCPC Registration or pending
  • Experience of working in a department using IR(ME)R 2017 and IRR 2017 regulations in clinical practice
  • Team player who can also work independently.
  • Able to work within protocols
  • Sound knowledge of all areas of Governance including H&S, COSHH, Manual Handling
  • Experience of teaching, mentoring, and supporting colleagues training and development.
  • Effective verbal, non-verbal and written communication skills including responding appropriately to distressed patients and staff and distressing circumstances e.g. suspected physical abuse, major trauma, cancer and death.
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Application form expresses a strong, specific reason for wanting to work at UHS
