Main duties of the job
Online applications are invited for a Consultant in Paediatric Oncology. This is a 8 PA substantive post.
The Trust is a major teaching centre for the University of Southampton providing a tertiary paediatric oncology service for the Wessex region. All major paediatric specialities are also provided including, allergy, cardiology, ENT, gastroenterology, urology, nephrology, neonatology (level 3), neurology and neurosurgery, orthopaedics (including spinal), paediatric intensive care, paediatric and neonatal surgery, diabetes, respiratory medicine, radiology and endocrinology. The hospital offers ample opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and excellent facilities for research and clinical care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for a colleague to join a team of 8 paediatric oncology/haematology consultants. The successful applicant will be involved in the care of children with all types of malignancy, but with primary responsibility for patients with solid tumours and leukaemia as well as those on early phase clinical trials. They will work closely with a strong multi-disciplinary team to provide specialist care of children with cancer across the Wessex region, including support of the 11 paediatric oncology shared care units across the region. They will be enthusiastic, highly motivated and help develop our paediatric oncology daycare and ambulatory service.
Applications will ideally have a CST or be on the GMC’s Specialist Register. Applicants who are within six months of obtaining their CST are also invited to apply. Where equivalent qualifications and experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to their application.

Qualifications and training
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCPCH or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Completion or evidence of working towards a higher academic degree (MD/PhD)
- CCT in Paediatrics with subspeciality recognition in Oncology (or equivalent) or be within six months of CCT date or have undertaken comparable paediatric oncology training oversees
Previous or relevant experience
Essential criteria
- Appropriate paediatric oncology knowledge base to work as consultant, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
Desirable criteria
- Experience of early phase clinical trials
- Research experience and publications
- Experience of recruitment of patients to clinical trials
- Experience of service development and/or quality improvement
Aptitudes and skills
Essential criteria
- Knowledge, clinical and technical skills to provide a consultant led service in Paediatric Oncology
- Experience in the management of paediatric malignancies and paediatric oncological emergencies, including the prescription and delivery of complex chemotherapy
- Clinical skills in bone marrow aspiration/biopsy and lumbar puncture
- Knowledge and experience of clinical governance and audit
Desirable criteria
- Familiarity with working in networks / shared care
