As a Band 6 Nurse on a surgical Lower GI ward, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients. You will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care, ensuring their safety, comfort, and well-being at all times. You will lead and supervise junior staff, promoting a collaborative and supportive team environment. Additionally, you will liaise with multidisciplinary teams, family members, and other healthcare professionals to provide holistic patient care.

We are seeking a motivated, skilled, and empathetic individual with a proven ability to work in an acute and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in clinical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a commitment to professional development. You should be a registered nurse with experience in the relevant clinical setting, and possess leadership capabilities to take charge of patient care and contribute to the ward’s overall efficiency and quality standards.

The Ward Sister will provide leadership, clinical expertise, and supervision for the nursing team within an acute surgical ward-E5 Lower. This role involves managing day-to-day operations, ensuring high standards of patient care, and fostering a safe, supportive, and effective working environment. The Ward Sister will be responsible for ensuring that all nursing care is delivered in line with hospital policies, nursing standards, and best practices, ensuring quality care for patients undergoing surgery and post-operative recovery.

Key Responsibilities:
-Lead and manage the nursing team on the acute surgical ward, providing direction, supervision, and support.
-Ensure all patients receive high-quality, evidence-based nursing care appropriate for their condition.
-Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to junior staff, including registered nurses, healthcare assistants, and student nurses.
-Conduct performance appraisals and ensure staff training and development needs are met.
-Promote a culture of continuous learning, ensuring that nursing staff are up-to-date with best practices in surgical care.
-Manage staffing levels, including scheduling shifts and overseeing attendance.
-Participate in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and patient safety programs.
-Work closely with surgical consultants, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care and smooth patient pathways.
-Attend multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings to discuss complex patient cases and treatment plans.
-Facilitate effective communication with patients and their families, providing support and education regarding the surgical process, expected outcomes, and discharge planning

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

  • Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
  • Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
  • Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgement
