Job overview
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.
The post is for a full time Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in Glaucoma. The Newcastle Eye Centre is a very busy department covering the Newcastle area and its surroundings. The successful candidate will work with a team of 3 Glaucoma Consultants, one Associate Specialist, one fellow, one specialty doctor. The team is also supported by a team of 5 glaucoma practitioners, 2 nurse specialists, photographers and technicians. As part of developing services to address Covid backlogs we have developed an Imaging Hub which supports Glaucoma Virtual Clinics. There is good communication and collaboration with community optometrists, supported by a refined referral scheme and a discharge to community optician’s scheme. Glaucoma theatres are located at the RVI as well as Westgate CAV centre. The successful candidate will perform specialised clinics at the RVI as well as few peripheral clinics.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of effective and comprehensive Glaucoma service. They will join a Team of Consultants, Fellow , Specialty doctor , Associate specialist and glaucoma practitioners ,all working as a team in the Glaucoma Subspecialty .They will be expected to take part in the teaching of resident doctors and glaucoma practitioners as well as administrative roles within specialty. The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national Consultant contract.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Duties and Responsibilities:
Clinical:
· To be able to cover comprehensive management of glaucoma disease in a busy service
· To manage complex cataract cases
· To cover and manage glaucoma theatre lists as well as laser lists
· To perform glaucoma virtual clinics
Administrative:
· To participate in the departmental clinical audit meeting
· To manage clinics and theatre lists in close collaboration with secretaries and waiting list team
· To undertake managerial role as per Consultant job.
Research:
· To show interest in undertaking clinical trials for glaucoma
· Previous experience with clinical trials is appreciated.
Teaching:
· To participate in the departmental teaching for resident doctors and glaucoma practitioners
· To participate in the regional teaching for resident doctors
· Previous experience in teaching is welcome.
Person specification
Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
Essential criteria
- Primary Medical Qualification.
- Full GMC Registration.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree.
- Special skills training in the specialty/ fellowship
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of experience in the specialty.
- Evidence of a substantial commitment to the specialty.
- Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion within the speciality.
- Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
- Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
- Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
- An understanding of Clinical Governance.
Desirable criteria
- Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
- Evidence of leadership / project management.
- Evidence of having implemented change.
- Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
- Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
Desirable criteria
- Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
- Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
Research
Essential criteria
- Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
- Research/critical review of literature.
- Publications in the last five years.
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree.
Audit
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in audit.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
- Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
