Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

 

The post is suitable for an Ophthalmologist towards the end of their training or already in possession of CCT. It offers glaucoma management experience in a very busy department at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The successful candidate will work with a team of 3 Consultants, one Associate Specialist, one specialty doctor. Glaucoma team is supported by a comprehensive team of glaucoma practitioners, nurse specialists, photographers and technicians. UK candidates as well as overseas candidates will be considered for this job. There will be exposure to a wide range of glaucoma procedures, including , istent , Preserflo , Paul tube , Baerveldt Tube , trabeculectomy , glaucoma laser procedures , complex cataracts . There is a wide range of glaucoma pathology in specialised clinics and the successful candidate will be expected to perform glaucoma clinics at the RVI as well as peripheral clinics. An interest in research and audit is encouraged as well as participation in National and International Congresses.

Main duties of the job

Clinical:

·         Clinical sessions are supervised by one of the Glaucoma Consultants or Associate Specialist and offer a wide range of glaucoma complex cases, postop management and acute cases. Fellows are also expected to undertake laser sessions (SLT , PIs).

·         Glaucoma theatres are located across two sites and there is a wide range of both traditional filtering surgery as well as MIGS ( i-stent , Preserflo , canaloplasty awaiting approval )  , Paul and Baerveldt aqueous shunt tubes . Fellows will have exposure to a good number of trabeculectomy surgeries by the end of their fellowship as over 140 trabeculectomies are performed in the department every year. Fellows are also expected to undertake both supervised and independent cataract surgery lists , during which there is significant exposure to complex cases like phacomorphic glaucoma , pseudoexfoliation glaucoma , angle closure eyes , post trabeculectomy cases , etc.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Qualification.
  • Full GMC registration or eligibility to obtain this within 3 months (or within 6 months for non-EEA applicants).
  • Overseas candidates with equivalent qualifications will be considered
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in treating/ managing Glaucoma pathology

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good history & examination skills.
  • Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
  • Able to order appropriate investigations.
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice.
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience : glaucoma clinics / glaucoma or cataract surgery

Management and Administration Experience

  • Ability to run a service and participate in management process.
  • Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
