The Radiology department in Newham University Hospital is a busy, modern and well equipped department with multiple fully digital general X-ray rooms (DR), a Fluoroscopy screening room, multiple general ultrasound rooms, two state-of-the-art CT scanners (equipped with all the needed post-processing software: CT colon, CT coronary, CT PA, CT angio, etc), a new state-of-the-art wide-bore 1.5 T MRI scanner (Second 3T MRI currently under installation), state of the art digital mammography unit equipped with vacuum biopsy module, and multiple maternity ultrasound units. We are also managing some extra-mobile units and satellite x-ray hub at SGC and Shrewsbury road.

We are a completely paperless department with a cross-trust hospital information system (HIS), picture archiving and communication system (PACS), radiology information system (RIS) and voice recognition (VR) system for reporting.

Main duties of the job

The role

Applications are invited for the post of a Specialty Doctor in Radiology at Newham University Hospital (part of Barts Health NHS Trust). The post will be for a period of 12 months. It could be converted to permanent if the post holder is suitable.

 

The post holder will be expected to independently scan and report on ultrasound, CT and plain X-ray examinations both in the emergency setting and for ambulatory care (O.P). Specialty doctors will also be actively encouraged to report on different MRI scans and pursue a subspecialty interest in Radiology.

 

The successful post holder(s) would form part of our 7 specialty doctors’ rota and would be operating independently at near consultant level providing both emergency and ambulatory care. This is a fixed term full-time recruitment for a year (40 hours per week) to cover vacancies and provide cover for our Specialty Doctors team. This could include some weekends, in whole or in part.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals with the appropriate skill-set to join a first class multi-disciplinary team providing the full range of specialist services to the majority of East London and beyond in a progressive London teaching hospital environment.

 

The successful candidate(s) must have GMC registration. Please do not apply if you do not have a valid GMC registration as your application will not be considered.

 

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to audits and discrepancy meetings and all other clinical governance exercises taking place in the radiology department or across the Imaging Network. They will be also required to attend and participate in the various multidisciplinary meetings (MDM). They should be willing to teach the undergraduate medical students, radiology specialty registrars (SpRs), student radiographers and ultrasonographers.

A developed subspecialty in radiology is desirable and will be encouraged.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised degree in Radiology.
  • Medical qualification from a recognized University or Medical School & GMC registered or registerable soon
Desirable criteria
  • FRCR

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Must have basic interventional radiology skills, e.g. Drain insertions, pleural tapping, percutaneous biopsies.
  • At least 3 years’ experience working in a radiology department (after training)
  • At least 3 years of Radiology training in a teaching hospital setting
  • Experience of the UK National Health Service
  • A broad range of knowledge in other relevant disciplines
Desirable criteria
  • A good grasp of current radiology literatur
  • Carotid ultrasound experience
  • Mammography experience
  • Hip ultrasound experience
  • Obstetric/Antenatal ultrasound skills with relevant accreditation

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Record of completed audit projects.
  • Ability to teach essential radiology to pre-graduate medical students, radiographers, and junior medical staff
  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English with colleagues and patients/their family
Desirable criteria
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance and its applications in Medical Imaging
  • Certification in Education
