Consultant Haematologist with a specialist interest in inherited and acquired bleeding disorders

YM72

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain’s leading healthcare providers.

The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.

Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our WeCare values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.

Barts Health supports the Pregnancy Loss Pledge and commits to supporting their staff through the distress of miscarriage.

Consultant Haematologist with a specialist interest in inherited and acquired bleeding disorders

Bart’s Health is seeking an enthusiastic and self-motivated consultant haematologist to join their team. This is a replacement 10PA substantive, full time post and joins an existing team of 3 other consultants who between them cover all areas of care for patients with inherited and acquired bleeding disorders. This post is essential to ensuring that we continue to provide a high standard of care for patients with inherited and acquired bleeding disorders and will help with the sustainability, development, and expansion of the service at Barts Health NHS Trust.

Context:
The Department of Clinical Haematology is based on 4 sites (Royal London, St Bartholomew’s, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals) and functions as one department. The medical team consists of 22 consultant haematologists and 9 haematology trainees, plus middle grade and academic haematology fellows. We have a busy and interesting clinical and research practice and hold one of the largest NIHR-funded research portfolio for non-malignant haematology research in the UK.

The Pathology laboratory is one of the largest in the UK and all laboratories are UKAS-accredited. Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University NHSFT and Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust have agreed to form a Pathology Partnership. The three organisations process more than 100,000 tests a day on behalf of patients across Northeast and South East London.

The post holder will take part in haemophilia attending duties and provide outpatient care for patients with a variety of inherited bleeding disorders in adults and children, including the specialist musculoskeletal clinic. The postholder will be expected to further develop our network pathways and liaison with other specialties such as the dental pathway for North Thames. The postholder will also be expected to actively participate in clinical trials and will be encouraged to take PI roles for trials in inherited bleeding disorders. There is scope to develop a subspecialisation depending on the candidate’s interests.

The post holder will be part of an on-call rota providing haemostasis and thrombosis advice for Barts Health, and the wider region for haemophilia, out of hours. This is currently on a 1:7 rota and is non-resident; consultants are not expected to be on site out of hours unless there is a major incident. The postholder will also participate in our advice and guidance single electronic point of referral service providing direct access to specialist advice.
