Job overview
We are inviting applications for a full-time post of Locum Consultant in Urology at Ipswich Hospital. The Urology Team at ESNEFT is located across two sites, Ipswich and Colchester. Whilst this role is primarily located at Ipswich Hospital there is an expectation of some cross site working.
The Urology department currently consists of six Consultants. The department is also supported by a visiting paediatric urologist from Norfolk and Norwich University hospital, two higher surgical trainees (ST), three SAS doctors and one core surgical trainee (CT). This application is for a new post which has been created to meet the increasing demand which resulted in building additional infrastructure.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will have the responsibility of providing a wide range of core and diagnostic urological services. Candidates with a subspecialty interest in surgical andrology/female and reconstructive urology and experience with HoLEP will fit the need of the department. Every opportunity will be given to develop a subspecialty interest. Necessary support and mentoring will be provided within the unit.
ESNEFT have invested in Robotics and this service is available on both sites. Urological robotic services at present are delivered from Colchester site which, in future may be delivered from Ipswich site as well.

We are building for better care with an exciting capital development programme across our sites – totalling £100million over the next five years.
We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.
We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.
At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The appointee will participate in a 1 in 7 (provisional) prospective on-call rota, supported by a 24/7 mid-grade on call rota. When on-call, all routine consultant activity is cancelled to allow assessment and treatment of emergency patients. Cover is provided by mutual arrangement with colleagues to allow off site activity to take place. The department offers cover for acute paediatric urological conditions. Emergency cases are admitted under the care of the on call consultant for that day, who is responsible for their subsequent care.
The post holder will be expected to do a daily ward round including Saturday and Sunday when on call. This is recognised within the job plan. The successful candidate will provide independent out-patient, diagnostic clinics and in-patient urology care at Ipswich hospital. He will be expected to provide supervision and training to the middle grade doctors and trainees.
The post-holder will share responsibilities for in-patient care with the current consultants. The post holder will also be is expected to be the core member of the urological cancer MDT and also support SMDT meetings. Senior clinicians offer excellent mentorship to support.

- Full GMC registration with a license to practice
- FRCS ( Urology ) or equivalent
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a wide range of urological problems
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Ability to perform core and specialised Urological operations of chosen sub speciality interest independently.
- Ability to organize and manage outpatient priorities, investigations and treatment
- Ability to teach basic clinical skills in urology to undergraduates and Higher Surgical trainees.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, carers, and colleagues
- Excellent team-working and interpersonal skills
Desirable criteria
- Research experience/ Higher degree MD/ PhD
- Fellowship / evidence of subspecialty training experience
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Presentation at National / International meetings
