Whipps Cross Hospital
A full time 6 - 12-month fixed term Locum Consultant post in Anaesthesia, based at Whipps Cross Hospital, has become available in order to provide cover for Maternity Leave. The post will likely be available from May/June 2025. Applications are also encouraged from those who may be available later in the year.
Main duties of the job
The focus of the job plan is of a general nature. The appointee must be able to work flexibly and be able to cover all the specialities provided for at Whipps Cross. Those with additional experience in obstetrics, regional, trauma and paediatrics will be beneficial to the service. There may be a requirement to join the 1:16 out of hours consultant on call rota.
We are looking for people who can make a specific contribution to the department and hospital.
This is an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals with the appropriate skills to join a first-class multi-disciplinary team providing the full range of services to the majority of East London and beyond in a progressive London teaching hospital environment.
The post holder will be an employee of Barts Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at one of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

Qualifications/Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
- • GMC Registration
- • FRCA or equivalent
- • Valid ALS
- • Evidence of technical and non-technical practice at consultant level
- • Evidence of completion of further fellowships/advanced skills in subspecialities relevant to District General Hospital anaesthesia
Desirable criteria
- • Experience of UK healthcare system
- • Valid APLS/EPLS
Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience
Essential criteria
- • Wide experience in aspects of elective and emergency anaesthesia, and acute pain management at consultant level
- • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients at consultant level
Desirable criteria
- • Experience participating in on-call at consultant level in a District General Hospital
Personal Skills/Qualities
Essential criteria
- • Ability to communicate clearly and intelligently in written and spoken English
- • Ability to lead a multidisciplinary team, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
- • Ability to build strong and effective relationships with patients, relatives and colleagues
- • Ability to cope with pressure and adapt to change
Desirable criteria
- • Ability to directing and train medical, nursing, midwifery and other professions allied to anaesthesia
- • Ability to lead multidisciplinary protocol/process development
Teaching & Training
Essential criteria
- • Experience in teaching of undergraduates, junior medical staff, nurses, midwifery or other health professionals allied to anaesthesia.
Desirable criteria
- • Teaching Fellow experience/Certificate of education
- • Evidence of training in teaching skills
- • Instructor status in one or more of ALS, APLS, ATLS
Research, Quality Improvement, Audit
Essential criteria
- • Understands research, QI and audit methodology
- • Experience of QI/Audit/Research work in+ anaesthesia
- • Actively encourages research, audit and QI work amongst staff and colleagues
Desirable criteria
- • Published or submitted completed work to a peer reviewed journal
Additional Requirements
Essential criteria
- • Commitment to continuing personal development and medical education
Desirable criteria
- • Experience in Clinical governance
- • Computer skills
