This role will transfer to UHS Estates Ltd (UEL) from 1st April 2025. UEL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The job description, terms and benefits associated with the role will not change as a result of this transfer.

Main duties of the job

The Estates Maintenance Department is looking to recruit a maintenance assistant higher to join our dedicated team at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust. We operate across Southampton General Hospital and Princess Anne Hospital, which is a large static site. You will work with a team of Assistants and trades staff and assist in repairing and maintaining various systems throughout the hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
•    Assisting band 2 maintenance assistants
•    Plumbing and drainage
•    Boilers/calorifiers.
•    Nurse call, portable equipment testing
•    Ventilation
•    Lamp/fluorescent tube replacement
•    Minor building fabric repairs
•    Decoration of small areas/rooms as they become available
•    Hanging/rehanging of notice boards/whiteboards
•    General maintenance-related cleaning duties
•    Providing backup for craftsmen/contractors
•    Other specialist duties may also be required after appropriate training.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


•    Relevant and recent experience in a similar maintenance organisation.
•    Working at Heights & Manual handling
•    Demonstrable experience and knowledge of identifying faults and assisting in repairs
Desirable criteria
•    Experience in Minor repairs to Mechanical & Electrical Building installations
•    Experience of carrying out Routine Surveys & Audits
•    Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary Estates & Facilities team in a healthcare environment
Qualifications
Essential criteria
•    Knowledge & experience in engineering practises Base level of theoretical knowledge.
•    Knowledge & relevant experience plumbing, electrical & building repairs.
•    Full and clean driving licence
Desirable criteria

•    CSCS, PASMA, IPAF
•    NVQ 3, City and Guilds or equivalent experience in performing engineering operations

Annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays) starting at 35 days and rising to 41 days (after 10 years of service) 

The basic salary is £23,615 pa

Core working hours are Mon – Fri 07:30 – 15:30 however you will be expected to participate in an out-of-hours roster that requires weekday working 1400 – 2200 approximately 1-weekday-in-10 and weekend working 0730 – 1530 approximately 1 weekend in 10.

The Estates Maintenance department has a demonstrable track record in developing staff to enhance personal learning through training and promotional opportunities

  • Knowledge & experience in engineering practises Base level of theoretical knowledge.
  • Knowledge & relevant experience plumbing, electrical & building repairs.
  • NVQ 3, City and Guilds or equivalent experience in performing engineering operations
Desirable criteria
  • CSCS, PASMA, IPAF

Previous or relevant experience necessary
