This role will transfer to UHS Estates Ltd (UEL) from 1st April 2025. UEL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. The job description, terms and benefits associated with the role will not change as a result of this transfer.
Main duties of the job
We are looking to recruit a maintenance assistant into our team at University Hospital Southampton Foundation NHS Trust.
The ideal candidate will gain experience working on the following systems.
• Air Handling Units & Ventilation Plant
• Electrical Systems such as lighting circuits/UPS
• Heating & Cooling systems
• Nurse-call Systems
• Softening plant
• Fire Systems

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Typical Duties Include:
• Routine maintenance tasks such as component replacement, recording performance data and plant room inspections
• Working with contractors to deliver maintenance works
• Working under direction of trade & supervisory staff to undertake engineering repairs
• Co-ordinating materials and resources to ensure they are available when & where required
• Basic plumbing & electrical tasks
The role will include comprehensive training to allow effective delivery of the role. The right candidate will also find opportunities to undertake formal engineering qualifications to allow progression to higher roles such as electrician or mechanical fitter.
Requirements and Skills
Essential
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Computer literate (able to use PDA/Smartphone and MS Outlook for emails)
• Physically fit; able to climb a ladder and manoeuvre loads upto 25kg
Desirable
• Previous experience in a similar role
• Previous experience performing similar tasks such as DIY, Vehicle Repair or Metal/woodwork
• Understanding of engineering principles and safe working practices

Annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays) starting at 35 days and rising to 41 days (after 10 years of service)
The basic salary is £23,615 pa
Core working hours are Mon – Fri 07:30 – 15:30 however you will be expected to participate in an out-of-hours roster that requires weekday working 1400 – 2200 approximately 1-weekday-in-10 and weekend working 0730 – 1530 approximately 1 weekend in 10.
The Estates Maintenance department has a demonstrable track record in developing staff to enhance personal learning through training and promotional opportunities.

Qualifications / training required
Essential criteria
- Knowledge & experience in building repairs.
- Base level of theoretical knowledge
Desirable criteria
- Any City & Guilds Building services certificates
Previous or relevant experience necessary
Essential criteria
- Must have gained suitable maintenance experience. Able to demonstrate adequate working knowledge of various maintenance tasks and safe practices.
Desirable criteria
- Basis plumbing knowledge
- COSHH Regulations
Special requirements of the post
Essential criteria
- Live within a travel radius of 60 minutes to Southampton General Hospital.
Desirable criteria
- Hold a driving licence.
