Main duties of the job

We are looking for a motivated and dynamic senior paediatric trainee doctor (ST4+) to join our team as a paediatric obesity fellow. The role will involve a combination of clinical work and quality improvement/ research work. Candidates will need to have excellent team working and communication skills and show an interest in supporting patients with chronic disease using the biopsychosocial model.

Southampton Children’s Hospital leads the South East Complications of Excess Weight regional network. You will be working within the paediatric endocrine department with a friendly, supportive and forward-thinking team. The department has been an early adopter of new medications and is involved in a number of clinical trails. The role does not include an on-call component and includes the option of some remote working for designated non-clinical days.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do

Clinical duties will include:
-    Attendance at obesity clinics
-    Direct clinical administration duties
-    Ward reviews including admission and discharge meeting at Bursledon House
-    Attendance at safeguarding/ professional meetings
Quality Improvement work:
-    Opportunities to be involved in a number of quality improvements projects including eg writing guidelines, reviewing and refining clinical pathways, collecting patient reported experience measure (PREM) and outcome data, and to continue engagement work with other health professionals in primary and secondary care who see children living with obesity 
-    Opportunities to be involved in teaching and organisation of network education days
-    Opportunities to better understand management and funding structures within the NHS
Academic
-    Opportunity to be involved in commercial research
-    Opportunity to collect and analyse patient data with the expectation of submitting work for presentation at a national conference during the placement


What we’re looking for

Successful candidates will need:
 
-    Full GMC license and completed MRCPCH examinations
-    Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English). 
-    ST4+ level in terms of clinical experience
-    Great team player with experience of MDT working and care of patients with chronic conditions
-    Self motivated with a track record of having completed projects

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION  

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).   
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.  
Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. 
Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     

Basic Salary – MT05 £70,425 

  
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview 
 Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  
Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • MRCPCH membership examinations
  • ST4 level or above
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in paediatric endocrinology
  • Experience in paediatric diabetes
  • Previous completion of quality improvement projects
