West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

Job overview

If you are recently qualified and looking for a post to support your transition from student to clinician or have some qualified work experience, but would like to explore other service areas, then this rotational post is for you. You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse mix of clients across multiple settings in order to support the development of your core occupational therapy skills.  The rotations are in a range of clinical areas in both physical and mental health, as well as inpatient and community services.

Rotations include:

•    Clayponds Rehabilitation Hospital (Ealing)
•    Community Independence Service (Hammersmith and Fulham) – Short Term Rehab
•    Community Independence Service (Hammersmith and Fulham) – Case Management
•    Mental Health Integrated Network Team (Hounslow)
•    Community Recovery Service
•    Integrated Community Rapid Reponses Service
•    Wheelchair Service

Each rotation is a minimum of 6 months in duration and supervision is offered by a senior occupational therapist and/or therapy lead in each service area.  West London NHS Trust has strong allied health professional and occupational therapy leadership teams, which are supportive of staff and their development needs.  There is an established preceptorship programme for your first 18 months in a qualified position, which includes teaching sessions, peer support and one-to-one support sessions.

Main duties of the job

As a qualified occupational therapist, you will be expected to work autonomously and carry a defined caseload of patients. You will utilise your clinical knowledge and skills in the assessment, rehabilitation and facilitation of safe and timely discharges. Duties include:

•    Assessment of patients with an array of conditions and needs.
•    Clinical reasoning, goal setting, provision of evidence-based rehabilitation in line with your case formulations and evaluation.
•    Person-centred occupational therapy service delivery to a defined caseload, working with multi-disciplinary team members and occupational therapy colleagues to support the service users with compassion to reach their potential and live a quality life.

In the Acute Mental Health Unit at Lakeside rotation you will be expected to:
•    Undertake assessments to evaluate cognitive and functional abilities to guide intervention and manage risks in an acute setting.
•    Deliver individual and group therapy focused on daily living and functional skills alongside recovery-oriented activities.
•    Work with the multidisciplinary team to manage risks, stabilise symptoms, and address immediate functional needs.
•    Support with discharge planning by working with the multidisciplinary team and liaising with community services to support transitions to promote independence and reduce relapse risk.
