Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dynamic Pharmacy Technician to join our team as a Lead Pharmacy Technician. In this role, you will lead and develop the operational aspects of our dispensaries and associated staff, playing a key role in maintaining a high quality, safe, well-governed, productive and cost-effective medicines supply service to our wards and community teams. 

The successful candidate will be driven to introduce new ways of working to optimise the pharmacy supply service, your expertise will contribute to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of our services.

Requires a GPhC registered technician who can demonstrate excellent leadership and organisational skills, can communicate effectively across all disciplines, ability to prioritise and independently manage their own workload.

Main duties of the job

This is a permanent post working 37.5 hours a week over 5 days (Monday to Friday), compressed hours can be considered on appointment. 

A requirement to participate in weekend and bank holidays on a rotational basis will be necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Lead and develop the team to achieve service goals while driving quality improvements and efficiency in the medicines supply service as part of the pharmacy strategic plan.

Response to queries re medicines recalls/ supply/ shortages, and deal with any queries as required relevant to the service area.

To collate and communicate any significant events, notifiable safety incidents and near misses relating to medicines supply service. 

Implement good stock management.

Represent the pharmacy department at relevant internal and external meetings, contribution to decision making, providing networking opportunities, sharing of good practice.

Be friendly, supportive, and communicate effectively in a professional and timely manner.

Develop and deliver training and educational programmes for technical staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team, which are competency based, in line departmental, national and regional standards.

Oversee the development, review, and management of standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with organisational policies and regulatory standards.

Line manage staff and ensure all staff receive individual performance reviews and support identified objectives and training requirements. 

Authorise leave/time off, ensuring appropriate cover is available to provide a consistent service for our service users. 

Deputise for the Chief Pharmacy Technician in their absence or as a developmental opportunity.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC diploma in pharmaceutical science & NVQ level 3 diploma in pharmacy skills (or equivalent qualification).
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing a team or service using planning, prioritising and delegation skills.
  • Experience of working as a pharmacy technician in a hospital environment.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of medicines optimisation
  • Good IT, able to use Microsoft office software, electronic pharmacy and patient record systems.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide clear, concise and professional written and verbal communication.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build effective, trusting professional relationship.
