Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion to join our People and OD directorate. 

You will be an exceptional leader with the ability to drive forward our EDI agenda and support us to develop an inclusive culture.

Reporting to the Associate Director of People and OD, we are seeking someone who is able to work both operationally and strategically, with the ability to effectively network and manage stakeholders. 

The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert in equality, diversity and inclusion, and act as an advocate for and influencer of, an inclusive culture.

You must have significant experience of delivering and co-ordinating EDI programmes in complex and challenging environments including advising at executive level and have in depth knowledge of current equality legislation. You must also have excellent interpersonal, influencing and communication skills.

In addition to the above you will be a creative thinker with strong communication skills, robust project management skills, including being confident in analysing data, reporting and managing risk and issues and able to work flexibly under pressure and meet deadlines.

Main duties of the job

Lead the development and implementation of a collaborative equality, diversity and inclusion strategy and associated delivery plans/policies, which identify the importance of intersectionality in delivering EDI and the value of hearing and acting on lived experience.

Provide strategic direction, leadership and advice across the broad portfolio of the EDI agenda within the Trust, whilst maximising opportunities to work across all of the ICS partner organisations. 

Act as the subject matter expert and specialist advisor to the Trust on the range of EDI areas, researching and keeping up to date with all legislative requirements, best practice NHS and other relevant sector-specific initiatives. 

Lead the development of programmes of work, strategies and interventions to improve the experience and accessibility of all staff employed within the Trust.

Work in partnership with the staff networks in the development and delivery of EDI interventions. 

Provide input and EDI expertise to the senior leadership team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·        To lead the development and implementation of a Trust-wide, whole systems approach to implementing an equality and diversity framework in line with legislation, NHS Guidance and good practice.

·        To provide strategic leadership for equality and diversity and social inclusion across the Trust.

·        To Support the Trust, implement the Messenger report in line with national guidance

·        To lead the development, implementation and impact monitoring of equality and diversity training across the Trust and ensuring that this links with NHS E guidance on inclusive leadership. 

·        To provide expert and professional leadership to the Trust on equality and diversity and social inclusion and ensure the Trust meets its statutory and legal obligations on EDI.

·        To provide support to directorates across the Trust in developing and implementing local equality and diversity and social inclusion plans.

·        To manage staffing and financial resources to ensure maximum return on investment.

·        To develop partnerships, both internal to and external of the organisation, to assist in maintenance and development of effective equality and diversity and social inclusion work programmes.

·        To provide leadership and development of Equality Impact Assessment processes across the Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A post-graduate degree (e.g. master’s or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, or proven high performance academic ability

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience of operating in a senior EDI leadership role with experience of working strategically to develop and implement key EDI strategies and associated policies and procedures.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders – both internally and externally.
  • Ability to think both creatively and analytically to develop effective solutions to highly complex issues.
  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to communicate on highly complex, sensitive or contentious matters in difficult situations and influence colleagues
