Applications are invited for a full-time Clinical Fellow in Nutrition and Intestinal Failure at University Hospital of Southampton (UHS). This is an exciting training post and opportunity to spend 12 months working within a thriving multidisciplinary nutrition team in a large Integrated Intestinal Failure centre, commissioned to provide Type 2 and 3 IF care to patients from a wide area of Southern England. The post can be tailor made to the applicant's training needs but has a focus on inpatient and outpatient management of patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition support.

You will manage inpatients' with Types 1,2 and 3 Intestinal Failure and review patients on home parenteral support in the outpatient clinic. They will also be involved in reviewing patients requiring enteral nutrition support. They will work as an integral part of the Multidisciplinary nutrition team. 

There will also be endoscopy and general gastroenterology experience available if appropriate for the ongoing training of the successful applicant. 

This role would suit registrars interested in pursuing a career in luminal gastroenterology, particularly Intestinal Failure. 

The role will include opportunities for involvement in audit and research and engagement with post graduate teaching programmes within the hospital. Involvement in national Intestinal Failure initiatives would be possible for an interested candidate. Educational Supervision will be provided. 

We have close links with the Intestinal Transplant team at Cambridge and would support involvement in National Adult Small Intestinal Transplant meetings as well a period of time spent with the Intestinal Transplant team at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge during this post. 
 
Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council.  The applicant must have MRCP (UK) and experience in Gastroenterology. Ideally the applicant will have completed, or be currently undertaking, the Gastroenterology registrar training programme. The role can be adapted to suit an applicant still within training or post-Certificate of Completion of Training. Non-UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate their competence to communicate in spoken and written English.

 

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).
   
Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post.

The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. 

All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.  

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. 

Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)     

Basic Salary – MT04  £61,825       Basic Salary – MT05 £70,425 

 Salary will be assessed based on experience and skills. Eligibility criteria for appointment to a Nodal Point 5; 
•    Have a minimum of 6 years of Specialty training    
•    Hold relevant higher specialty exam (e.g FRCP, FRCA, FRCS) 
•    A portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they meet the criteria for progression (in line with the Curriculum for the speciality similar to deanery trainee)
                     
Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview  

Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role.  

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.

  • At least four years medical experience since qualification
  • Experience in Gastroenterology and General Medicine with exposure other Medical specialties
  • Evidence of willingness to teach students and colleagues
  • ALS certificate
  • Understanding of audit
  • At least 6 months attached to Gastroenterology team
