We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Phlebotomist/Administrator to support the Clinical Investigation Unit at Royal Surrey Financial Trust Hospital. This role is ideal for someone with strong phlebotomy skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for delivering high-quality patient care.

As a Phlebotomist/Administrator, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of the Clinical Investigation Unit. You will be responsible for both patient-facing duties, such as phlebotomy and sample collection, as well as essential administrative tasks that support the unit’s daily functions.

Phlebotomy – Collecting blood samples from patients with care and precision

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Collects, using venepuncture procedures, blood samples from adult and paediatric patients
in a variety of settings, selecting the appropriate equipment for the procedure.
• Collect venous blood samples for blood culture testing selecting the appropriate equipment
and adhering to specific infection control measures and policies.

• Monitors and maintains the health, safety and security of self and patients during the
venepuncture procedure. Practices within risk management/ occupational health legislation
and Trust procedures, and is aware of potential hazards.
• Collects samples from patients in high risk categories and is aware of potential hazards. Is
able to follow agreed protocols to minimise risk to self and others.
• Is aware of the clinical conditions and precautions that are necessary for sample quality to
be maintained during the venepuncture procedure, and makes the decision of appropriate site
selection, correct use of tourniquet and selection of blood sample bottles.
• Is proficient in performing Point of Care sample testing and be able to make a judgements
to meet the requirements of the clinical investigation unit assessments, typically analysing
samples and following the appropriate SOP.
• Ensures that blood sample bottles are accurately labelled in accordance with departmental
policies and procedures.
• Ensures that clinical samples are correctly packaged for transportation to the laboratory in
accordance with the policies and procedures of the Pathology Department.
• Is proficient in the use, maintenance and quality control procedures of the departmental
equipment.
• Works to ensure that departmental performance targets are met by continually assessing
priority of own work; taking into account individual needs of the patient. To monitor patient
demand levels in the clinics.
• Is fully conversant with and works to relevant departmental policies and Standard Operating
Procedures, ensuring that personal performance complies with ISO standards (International
standards organisation).
• Provides support to junior members of staff, and encourage best practice.
• Is proficient in measure and record blood pressure (BP), weight (WT), and BMI assessment
using the departmental/trust IT system.
• Maintain and update patient files as and when required.
• Contact patients for rebooking and appointment scheduling, ensuring correct print
appointment cards, letters, and picklists for clinics and sent in a timely manner.
• Create and manage clinic schedules, including adding slots and cancelling clinics on the
departmental/trusts IT systems.
• Liaise with other hospitals to retrieve blood test results following the appropriate performance
indicators.
Information Technology:
• Is able to use the departmental /Trusts computer system to check emails and participate in
e-learning
• To view and move between several open applications simultaneously e.g., site specific ICE
applications, EPR, printing screens

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic numeracy and language skills
  • Is able to undertake an initial 6 week training programme running concurrently over five days per week
  • Venepuncture certificate or evidence of Phlebotomy training

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of relevant Medical Terminology
  • To demonstrate the ability to collect blood samples correctly
  • Previous phlebotomy/administrator experience in a healthcare environment
  • The post holder will be assessed on their practical skills and knowledge base and must have reached competency equivalent to QCF Level 3 Unit 4223/340 Obtain A Venous Blood Sample(HSC 3053).
  • Be able to guide and supervise less experienced members of staf
  • Supports learning and development of self and others, with a willingness to learn, retain information and engage in any necessary induction and training programmes.
