Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Chemical Pathologist at Royal Surrey Hospital. This is a full time post available due to the retirement of the current post holder.
The Berkshire and Surrey Pathology network is a large pathology network of NHS laboratories serving Ashford & St Peter’s, Frimley Park, Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey, Wexham Park and Surrey and Sussex Hospitals.
The wider biochemistry department is strong clinically and analytically with an enthusiastic and supportive team of able chemical pathologists, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists providing a broad range of services including specialist analytical, interpretive and EQA services. Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services is recognised as a national leader in POCT services. Clinical services run by the department include bariatric, renal stone and lipid OPD clinics and a clinical investigation unit. The department is a referral centre for Trace Elements and Peptide Hormones analysis. It provides External Quality Assessment Schemes for trace elements, peptide hormones and Point of Care Testing. It also supports the South of England Hub for the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and has a cardiovascular biomarkers lab. The Department works closely with the University of Surrey, which brings together a variety of analytical and clinical groups within the University and NHS.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be based primarily at the Royal Surrey Hospital and will join the current Clinical scientists in offering support to the general biochemistry services. In addition the successful candidate will be expected to provide a lipidology clinical service to the Trust, to run the Clinical Investigations Unit and to provide clinical advice to Specialist Clinical Biochemistry services.
Participation in on-call rotas and duty biochemist sessions is required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant Chemical Pathologist based at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust.
The Blood Sciences laboratory at the Royal Surrey Hospital is one of the rapid response laboratories within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services offering an acute and outpatient service to the Royal Surrey Hospital.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Chemical Pathology
- MBBS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded
Experience
Essential criteria
- Fully trained in Chemical Pathology or Chemical Pathology / Metabolic Medicine
- Able to independently manage lipid disorders in an outpatient setting
- Significant evidence of experience in clinical leadership
