Senior Post-CCT Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics
Senior Clinical Fellow
At NNUH it is our privilege to provide healthcare to over one million people across Norfolk and surrounding areas. Our vision is to ‘provide the best care for every patient’, and if this inspires you and you share our values, we really want you to join our team.
NNUH is currently the busiest Trauma Unit in the East of England caring for almost 850 trauma patients annually many with complex care needs. We are enhancing our urgent and emergency care specialist services for patients with significant injuries as a result of trauma and have an ambition to become a Major Trauma Centre.
Our values support our vision and guide the behaviour of everything we do, these are:
People-focused
We look after the needs of our patients, carers and colleagues, to provide a safe and caring experience for all.
Respect
We act with care, compassion and kindness and value others’ diverse needs.
Integrity
We take an honest, open and ethical approach to everything we do.
Dedication
We work as one team and support each other to maintain the highest professional standards.
Excellence
We continuously learn and improve to achieve the best outcomes for our patients and our hospital.
Wish you were here? So do we.
We want all our staff to achieve a balance between work and personal life and understand how important flexible working can be. We welcome applications on a full or part time basis, various shift patterns and hybrid working, where roles allow.
At the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH), we know the benefits diversity can bring to our organisation such as creativity, innovation and compassion. All of which have a direct impact towards our staff and patient experience. We are committed to being a Hospital for All – being equitable and inclusive, and a place where all feel a sense of belonging. We therefore particularly encourage and welcome applications from candidates who are underrepresented in NNUH’s workforce. These include people from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, people with diverse abilities and people within the LGBT+ community.
Job overview
Applications are invited for a one year fellowship to commence in 2026, the start date could be negotiated. The post will involve duties mainly at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
The elective commitment will be to knee surgery in general, with specific exposure to revision knee surgery, including periprosthetic fractures. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will be already capable of performing primary joint replacements with minimal supervision, and gradually increase operative responsibility in revision surgery over a period of one year.
The appointee might be expected to be sharing some operating lists with more junior orthopaedic trainees & sensitivity towards their training needs & indeed participation in their training will be expected. The outpatient commitment will be to new & follow up joint replacement clinics. List & follow up clinic commitments will be coordinated with the ST from each firm. New patient clinics are organized by the fellow to run in parallel with consultant clinics.
A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.
We welcome all applications irrespective of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion. Additionally, people with disabilities will be offered an interview providing they meet the minimum criteria for the post. The Trust operates job share and flexible working.
Main duties of the job
The fellow is expected to organize, run & document the weekly hip arthroplasty / radiology MDT on a Tuesday evening and the monthly knee arthroplasty MDT. All upcoming revisions are discussed to facilitate planning, post-operative films are reviewed & complex cases requiring radiology input are discussed. The fellow is responsible for maintaining the revision hip data base, so proficiency with Microsoft Access is required. The knee surgeons run their MDT through the BAJIR database, so some experience with this would be desirable.
The successful applicant will have responsibility for coordinating the management of emergently-admitted, complex hip and knee problems (peri-prosthetic fractures, dislocations, infections). They might also be expected to occasionally participate in the general middle grade 1 in 12 on-call rota (often supervising a more junior trainee [ST3]) for additional remuneration.
Research is a high priority within the department & the successful candidate will be expected to participate & run projects with the supervising hip consultants & Professor Mcnamara, who is part of the Norwich Biofilms Group.
The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.
All employees, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.
