Job overview
Applications are invited for this full time Medical International Training Fellow (STR3+ Equivalent). This will be part of the MTI Scheme via the RCoA and AoMRC.

Main duties of the job
The duties of the post will be to provide anaesthetic services as timetabled by the Anaesthetic Department. This includes both pre-operative assessment of patients and ongoing post-operative anaesthetic support of patients in Recovery Ward and beyond. At least one third of the theatre allocation will be in designated subspecialty training and supervised by a Consultant to an appropriate level. There are four separate on call rotas for trainees who work a full shift system with internal cover. Thus at any one time there are trainees allocated to emergency theatre work, obstetric anaesthesia, intensive care with a more senior ST-Trainee to supervise and augment the above three. Consultant advice and/or presence are available at all times.
The theatre times and shift times are as follows:-
Normal working day – 7.00 am – 18:30 hrs
Emergency theatre twilight duty
Obstetric night duty
ICU duties
Out of hours cover will usually include holding an emergency bleep. Anaesthetists are called for Cardiac, Obstetric and Trauma Emergencies for all ages of patients and they are expected to respond in an appropriate manner.
The daytime clinical work will comprise of sessions consisting of routine or emergency surgical lists, maternity cover and intensive care work (according to rota experience).

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- FRCA or MD or equivalent, by date of appointment
Desirable criteria
- ALS/ATLS certified
Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 4 years post registration experience.
- Experience of acute medicine, emergency medicine or anaesthesia.
- Evidence of at least 3 years anaesthesia training outside the UK and European Union.
- Minimum 3 months experience in general adult intensive care
- Eligible for full GMC registration with licence to practise at time of Appointment
- Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: • Make the care of your patient your first concern • Protect and promote the health of patients and of the public • Provide a good standard of practice and care • Treat patients as individuals and respect their dignity • Work in partnership with patients • Be honest and open and act with integrity
- Evidence of achievement of Specialist Training in Anaesthesia by time of appointment demonstrated by • Two structured supportive references from supervising consultants who have worked with the applicant in the last 5 years
Desirable criteria
- Progress in ST grade (or equivalent ) in parent specialty
- More than 3 months experience in general adult intensive care
Skills/Ability/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Skilled in arterial and central venous cannulation.
- Basic IT skills

- Other ICU skills
- Experience with Clinical data management
Language Skills
Essential criteria
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: a) that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or b) have the following scores in the academic international English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6.
