DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will be complemented by Specialty Doctors, IMT deanery trainees and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP).

The Oncology Critical Care Unit (OCCU) is a state-of-the-art eight-bedded facility. The critical care service complements a comprehensive range of cancer specialties including surgical, clinical, medical, and Haematological oncology. The unit delivers about 600 patient episodes per year; 60% of which are surgical.

In addition, the post offers experience in clinical Anaesthesia, under immediate consultant supervision.

Each day shift will commence with a handover and the post holder will be required to:

•       Examine OCCU patients

•       Present the patients to the consultant intensivist on the ward round when detailed management plans will be made

•       The post holder will then be required to carry out those management plans

•       Hand over the care of his/her patients to the person covering the unit for the night

The OCCU resident is also a member of the cardiac arrest team and may be required to attend to acutely unwell patients outside the unit.

During the day the OCCU resident works under direct supervision by the OCCU consultant; out-of- hours the OCCU consultant is on call from home.

Duration and Monitoring of the Programme

This fellowship is for 12 months. The post is available to commence in August 2025. Those wishing to apply for fellowships after this date are encouraged to submit an application and state the date from which they wish to be considered. The post is based at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Manchester M20 4BX. Educational supervision will be provided.

Continuing Professional Development

The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Although this is not a recognised training post, the following benefits are available:

•       Trust and Departmental induction programmes

•       Weekly departmental teaching sessions

•       Experience and training in intensive care of adult cancer patients, including cardiovascular support, invasive CVS monitoring and mechanical ventilation.

•       Regular time-tabled sessions in clinical anaesthesia for a wide range of oncological surgical procedures, often complex and requiring multidisciplinary input. The specialities involved include GI and colorectal surgery, urology, gynaecology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and hepato-biliary surgery. Anaesthetic services are also provided for brachytherapy and  radiotherapy including proton beam treatment of paediatric patients.

•       Regular time-tabled sessions for supportive activities such as audit, administration etc

•       Acute pain service

•       Chronic pain management service

•       Support for developmental needs of the post holder

This post would be particularly suitable for those wishing to pursue a career in one of the acute medical (Anaesthesia, Intensive care, Emergency or Acute Medicine), oncological or surgical specialties.

Job Plan

The is an example of a potential rota pattern that the successful candidate would be working in the department, but would be agreed in a job planning meeting with Clinical Director for Anaesthesia and Critical Care when commencing in post.
