Job overview

Applications are invited for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our friendly and dynamic team within the Histopathology Service at the East Suffolk and North Essex Foundation Trust. 

This is a full time post, of 40 hours per week,contracted hours and working pattern will be discussed and agreed with successful candidate at appointment.

The post holder appointed will undertake general and specialty cut-up, and the reporting of routine surgical and non-gynae cytology cases under supervision of the consultant team. Currently surgical cut-up is performed by Consultant Pathologists, Specialty Registrars and Biomedical Scientists. Small biopsies are handled by the biomedical science staff. 

There is no on-call commitment.

Main duties of the job

CLINICAL

The post-holder will:

 

·         Participate in the departmental rota for routine and specialty surgical cut-up, which includes breast, colorectal, gynaecological and urological specimens.

·         To report routine surgical pathology and non-gynae cytology cases under the supervision of consultant histopathologists.

 

·         Regular participation in departmental clinical audits.

 

·         Attend MDTs according to rostering and clinical need.

 

·         Refer specialist cases to appropriate referral centres for reporting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

GENERAL

The post-holder will:

 

·         Work closely with consultant colleagues to provide a consultant-led service of the highest standard

 

·         Develop and maintain good working practices, including adhering to departmental SOPs and guidelines issued by professional bodies such as the Royal College of Pathologists

 

The post-holder will be responsible to the Chief Executive of the Trust via the Clinical Lead and Divisional Director.

  • Full GMC
  • completed full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis)
  • at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and
  • Ability to undertake routine surgical cut-up with confidence
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
