Job overview

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. 

This post is available to commence on the 6th August 2025 initially for 6 months with a view to extension to 12 months. 

This post offers an exciting opportunity to gain experience in surgical management of Type 2 and Type 3 Intestinal Failure patients and complex abdominal wall operative skills and experience. This post requires close collaboration with medical intestinal failure team. 

There can also be exposure to advanced/recurrent Colorectal Cancer and Robotic surgery for which the trust is a regional centre, but main bulk of the job will be intestinal failure. To benefit from this opportunity the successful applicant will be ST3 or more senior. Applicants should hold full UK GMC registration with a license to practise at time of application. The appointee will have a flexible remit and we will be able to tailor training to their benefit from the specialties outlined above. At a minimum the appointee will have one full theatre day weekly, an endoscopy list and a clinic. While the ability to colonoscope independently is desirable it is not an absolute requirement and training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

The post is based at the Freeman Hospital with no on-call commitments.  The individual will work alongside the medical and surgical intestinal failure team.  This post is ST3-5 equivalent and the individual will, as such, be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility at this level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical:
•    The doctor is expected to assist in the care of all patients to which he/she is allocated under the direct supervision of the consultant.  In addition he/she is expected to provide ‘cross-cover’ for all patients in the Unit when required to do so.  Duties include business, post-take and teaching ward rounds, OP clinics, Operating Theatre sessions, and administrative (dictation of summaries, letters, etc).

Administrative:
•    Each Resident Doctor is expected to carry out all administrative tasks allocated to him/her by the consultants.

Research:
•    This Directorate has a strong research pedigree and many ongoing clinical and scientific research projects.  The high volume of specialist activity performed in the Directorate ensures there is vast opportunity to instigate and perform research/audit projects.  Such activity is encouraged and results presented at regional, national and international meetings. 

Teaching:
•    The Unit has Stage II and III medical students attached to it.  Each Junior Doctor is expected to assist in their teaching together with the teaching and supervision of the Foundation Doctors and in all post-graduate activities of the Unit.  There is a strong unit commitment to the FOCP (Foundation of Clinical Practice) programme and HBP (hospital-based practice) and all members of the team are expected to contribute.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Qualification
  • Full UK GMC registration with a license to practise at time of application

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Satisfactory completion of foundation training or equivalent
  • Clinical acumen for registrar level
  • Previous paid NHS experience
  • Able to order appropriate investigations
  • Image interpretation relevant to practice
  • Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague

Maintaining Clinical Competence

  • Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments
