The salary scale above has been agreed as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2024/2025 and will be implemented in November 2024 backdated to 1st April 2024 where applicable.
Job overview
The post holder will provide deputy managerial support to the sterile services manager in the development, implementation and co-ordination of procedures and instructions relating to decontamination and processing of medical devices within sterile services department (SSD).
The post holder will be the decontamination deputy for the site, ensuring that all clinical areas are compliant with national and local regulations. The post holder will have responsibility (along with the SSD manager) for the SSD team and will use effective communication skills to be involved in changing plans and goals according to evaluation and review.
The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with all legislation/guidelines/procedures for existing and future decontamination requirements.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
To have responsibility for the operational management of the team and area of responsibility in the absence of the team leader.
To assist the SSD manager to ensure appropriate cover for planned and unplanned absence in the department , ensuring there is a correct skill mix to maintain high standards.
To help provide managerial leadership to all staff, ensuring that discipline is maintained and all staff have the opportunity to achieve their maximum potential through development and training.
Promote inter-professional working relationships within the SSD environment, and between the SSD department and other areas. In the absence of the SSD manager - effectively communicate any managerial or
operational problems to the theatre manager.
Communicate complex and sensitive information when dealing with issues of a sensitive or emotional subject specific to BCU staff, external suppliers or auditors. Comply with national and BCUHB policies and procedures relevant to area of work and be aware of impact on other services.
Help ensure all staff correctly adhere to national and BCUHB policies and
procedures/guidelines and relevant documentation,
Be actively involved in management meetings and, in the absence of the team leader facilitate team meetings to communicate information and ensure effective working and service provision. As delegated by the team leader- lead individual performance reviews for the team.

Qualifications/Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Member of the institute of decontamination sciences (IDSC) or willingness to become a full member
- Degree level education or relevant experience
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of WHTM 01/10-decontamination guidelines, EN ISO 13485, WHTM 01/01
- ECDL
- Management/leadership qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Understanding of current standards and requirements for Sterile Services
- Ability to work independently or as pat of a Team
- Ability to deal with multi faceted issue sin a stressful environment
Desirable criteria
- Experience of decontamination and sterilisation services
- Experience/knowledge of undertaking audit, and standard setting
- IT skills
- Evidence of experience within a large production environment
- Resource management
- Evidence of problem solving and decision making skills
- Evidence of staff, recruitment and workforce planning
