Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Band 7 podiatrist with a passion in wound care to join our team on a fixed term contract for 12 months to cover maternity leave. 

You will be joining a supportive and friendly team based in North Somerset. The ideal candidate will have a strong work ethic and the ability to work under pressure and as part of the wider team across the Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) area.

You will provide highly specialist skills in wound care to enable assessment, treatment and management of a complex high risk clinical and domiciliary caseload based in North Somerset. You will provide clinical leadership to support delivery of clinical excellence. 

You will work collaboratively with wound care leads in Bristol and South Gloucestershire to provide specialist clinical advice and guidance to internal/external stakeholders and provide education and development for clinicians across the BNSSG system to improve patient outcomes and patient experience. 

You will participate in the diabetes multidisciplinary foot clinics within secondary care working together with the diabetes and vascular leads providing clinical excellence and resilience. You will work closely with the clinical pathway leads, operational leads and the service manager to support the development and delivery of quality training, education, competency, supervision and clinical governance frameworks across the BNSSG geography in relation to the wound care pathway.

Main duties of the job

Delivery of a quality service to improve outcomes and experiences of those people accessing the Podiatry Service the post holder will work as an autonomous practitioner and be aligned to the wound care pathway.

Have a highly developed level of clinical knowledge, use differential diagnostic skills and pattern recognition to plan and execute skilled physical examination to further inform shared decision making and patient care plans in complex patients.

Provide highly specialist skills in wound care to enable assessment, treatment and management of a varied and complex high risk clinical caseload. Providing clinical leadership to support the delivery of clinical excellence across the service. Required to support patients in their self-management and promotion of health and wellbeing, offering literature to supplement their education and treatment and facilitate behavioural change where required; whilst recognising when referrals to other services is appropriate.

Provide specialist clinical advice and guidance within their speciality to internal and external stakeholders. Providing education and development for clinicians across the BNSSG system, relating to the wound care pathway.

Provide support to the Podiatry Clinical & Operational Lead and relevant MSKPOD governance groups in the development and delivery of quality training, education, competency, supervision and clinical governance frameworks across the BNSSG geography in relation to the wound care pathway.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Podiatric Medicine
  • Certificate in local anaesthesia
  • Post graduate training at masters level or equivalent in diabetes foot care, wound care, high risk foot or minor surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Non-medical prescriber or willingness to undertake qualification

Experience, skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Highly specialised clinical reasoning skills
  • Evidence of managing risk in unpredictable , uncertain situations to uphold patient safety
  • Specialised clinical skills and theoretical knowledge within full range of podiatric practice
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge and experience in regard to the diabetic and high risk foot
  • Evidence of teaching, supervising and mentoring abroad range of clinicians
  • Evidence of leadership behaviours including autonomous practice, self-reflection, promotion of cultural change
  • Experience of working as a clinical supervisor, designing, developing and delivering programmes of learning in line with evidence based practice to peers and junior staff members.
  • Clinically competent to assess and manage foot conditions involving in diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, wound care, or nail surgery, long term conditions putting the foot at high risk of complications.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of representing podiatry service in meetings, deputiaing for podiatry senior leadership.
  • Experience of developing, delivering and publishing evidence based system wide clinical pathways/guidelines
  • Experience of producing 72 hour reports and root cause analysis
