An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Medical Directorate across the Midland’s Region as a Deputy Medical Director System Improvement and Professional Standards. 

The post holder will provide professional and clinical leadership internally and externally within the region and take a leading role in supporting local health systems to achieve improvements in care and drive change towards patient centred and value-based healthcare. 

The Deputy Medical Director for System Improvement & Professional Standards will work in conjunction with the Medical Directors and other leaders from across the system to drive improvement in clinical outcomes and experience for the region’s population. 

We welcome applications from registered Medical Practitioners with at least 5 years post registration experience, including GP’s and clinicians in secondary care including mental health trusts

The Medical Sub Directorate has four primary functions delivered across its teams:

Responsibility for the delivery of key statutory functions: including Medical Revalidation and Appraisal; Professional Regulation; Performers list; Controlled Drugs; Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND); Regulation 28 and Freedom to Speak UP 

Provision of Professional & Clinical Leadership: including Clinical Engagement; Subject Matter Expertise; Clinical Communication 

Provision of Clinical Improvement Support: Including activities to support system improvement; implementation of national policy to support delivery of Long-Term Plan programmes; digital transformation; delivery of medical and clinical workforce programmes; supporting and championing research, innovation and sharing good practice.

Supporting and leading the delivery of Quality and Patient Safety: including work to improve patient care and prevent future deaths by delivering expert support into high-risk areas; improve understanding of the patient safety agenda; supporting delivery of national patient safety strategy; acting as point of escalation; and embedding risk management strategies to ensure harm is minimised and mitigated. 

The Medical Directorate works collaboratively with systems and providers to translate national strategic clinical policies to uphold good professional standards for primary care practitioners and to drive improvement and ensure patient safety and quality.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.

The directorate provides professional and clinical leadership support to medical, pharmacy, dentistry, allied healthcare and healthcare scientist professions, working closely with system colleagues to establish professional networks and cascades of communication and support. 

One of key deliverables is to drive achievement of Long-Term Plan (LTP) aims relating to Mental Health; Learning Disabilities & Autism; Long Term Conditions and Prevention; and Digital Transformation. Programme teams provide subject matter expertise, facilitating clinical networks, planning delivery, and implementing policy. 

Directorate functions are led by the Regional Medical Director supported by six Directors that provide strategic leadership through their functional areas.  Directorate operations are managed and coordinated through a Deputy Director of Clinical Delivery, operating across the breadth of the directorate.

The Deputy Medical Director for System Improvement & Professional Standards is a leadership role in the regional health system.  In conjunction with the Medical Director and other leaders from across the professional spectrum there is responsibility for the delivery of high quality clinical services for the region’s population. This will be in line with NHS and other governmental priorities. 

The prime aim is to secure ongoing improvement in clinical outcomes and the experience of care for the population

Essential Criteria

  • 1. GMC Registered Medical Practitioner. At least 5 years post registration experience, must continue to be fully registered whilst undertaking the role of Deputy Medical Director.
  • 2. Proven and significant leadership and management experience and/or formal management qualification.
  • 3. Experience of managing/supporting Professional Standards, Medical appraisal and Revalidation at a senior level.
  • 4. Ability to deal with complex and challenging situations in cross boundary working.
  • 5. Strong external communications skills in a politically sensitive environment and experience in handling media.
