Higher Biomedical Support Worker (Band 3) 6-month fixed term

Cellular Pathology has a vacancy for the post of Higher Biomedical Support Worker (Band 3; 6-month fixed term)  to join our busy, but friendly team with Cellular Pathology.

The department handles 44,000 surgical and diagnostic requests annually across the two sites. As the Bedfordshire Hospital Trusts forms a large general hospital we see a wide variety of tissue and diagnostic cytology specimens, including post mortem work.

Staff rotate around different sections of the Department including digital pathology.  Staff are based at Bedford Hospital site with an expectation to cover some shifts at Luton & Dunstable site. 

The Laboratory opening hours are currently 08:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday.

Applications are invited from those with a good general education preferably with some science subjects who would like to work in the healthcare laboratory setting.

The post holder will contribute to the day to day operations and limited technical aspects of the service.

The post holder will assist Associate BMS and senior laboratory BMS in the delivery of a high quality, efficient and effective service, through the Quality Management System [QMS].

The post holder is expected to follow policies and procedures ensuring that the service complies with current UKAS standards, national and European legislation and discipline specific regulatory bodies.

The post holder may be required to assist in the training of other support staff.

Main duties include:

To undertake the reception, identification and processing of samples in Cellular Pathology, as and when directed.

To assist with the routine technical work in the laboratory under the supervision of an Associate BMS a Biomedical Scientists.

To ensure work areas and benches are cleaned and tidied daily and all pieces of equipment in Cellular Pathology are cleaned weekly or as directed.

To make up stock chemical solutions and other reagents as required.

To assist in ensuring the laboratory has sufficient consumables, by fetching stock from stores as and when required. To ensure that stock is recorded accurately when used and delivered.

To assist in organising the laboratory store, by keeping stores tidy and rotating stock.

Checking and recording fridge and freezer temperatures daily, to ensure that they are within the statutory limits and notifying senior staff of any issues.

To report any problems or difficulties encountered in the performance of his/her duties immediately.

To bring to the attention of their Line Manager any problems or complaints.

To comply at all times with any regulation issued by the Trust, especially those governing Health & Safety at Work, and to ensure that any defects which may affect safety at work are brought to the attention of the appropriate manager
