Job overview

The Cellular Pathology team at Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust has a vacancy for an experienced State Registered Biomedical Scientist or Specialist BMS, banding and pay dependent on qualifications, knowledge and experience  . You must be well-motivated, experienced and an enthusiastic State Registered BMS to join our busy, but friendly team.

The department handles 44,000 surgical and diagnostic requests annually across two sites (Luton & Dunstable Hospital & Bedford Hospital). As the Bedfordshire Hospital Trusts forms a large general hospital we see a wide variety of tissue and diagnostic cytology specimens, including post mortem work.

The main Cellular Pathology Laboratory is based at Bedford Hospital site with an expectation that staff cover some shifts at Luton & Dunstable site. Digital Pathology is also being implemented.

Pathology has full UKAS accreditation, HTA & MHRA compliance.

You should have a good general histology background to IBMS Specialist Diploma level, which should include a working knowledge of special techniques including immunohistochemistry.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist in the day to day operations and technical aspects of the service.

The post holder will assist the senior laboratory BMS in the delivery of a high quality, efficient and effective service, through the Quality Management System [QMS].  They will assist in the implementation of change as directed by the laboratory seniors/manager, when delegated or appropriate to service needs.

 The post holder is expected to implement policies and procedures ensuring that the service complies with current UKAS standards, national and European legislation and discipline specific regulatory bodies.

 The post holder will assist in the training and development of scientific and support staff.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant specialist knowledge of Cellular Pathology techniques acquired over a significant period within a UK laboratory
Desirable criteria
  • Audit and evaluation, clinical & information governance

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent and demonstrable experience at BMS level
  • HCPC State Registration
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree or related professional health care qualification (FIBMS or Chartered Scientist) or equivalent
