An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, motivated and flexible individual to be part of a professional team maintaining and repairing medical devices within Bedford Hospital, and any other associated Trust establishments across the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust including outreach clinics and establishments used in the course of Trust business.

The successful candidate must possess an electronic background with medical device technology certification or equivalent training and experience. You will need to be able to work on your own initiative, have good interpersonal skills and a developed ability to communicate well.

Main duties of the job

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated Junior EBME Biomedical Engineering Technician to join our EBME Department at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust

You will play a key supporting role in the care and maintenance of a broad range of medical equipment throughout Bedford Hospital including across the community sites and sometimes Luton Hospital.

We are a busy department that provides a comprehensive service, carrying out the routine calibration, maintenance, repair and management of the Trust's medical equipment. The successful candidate will be required to work on various medical devices ranging from flow meters, suction units, weighing scales to Infusion pumps, Cardiac Monitors etc.

This is a full time position, working 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday 9:00am – 5:00pm).

You will be educated to ONC level in Medical Electronics/Engineering with knowledge and UK experience of working on medical equipment in an acute hospital. We will consider individuals who can demonstrate they have transferable skills and experience in general electrical/electronic engineering. The work requires being able to work on your own initiative and as part of a team.

  • To assist the Clinical Engineering team to provide technical support in all aspects relating to the preventative maintenance, inspection, repair and calibration of a wide range of patient-critical medical equipment; in a safe and professional manner and in accordance with departmental procedures, Trust policies, statutory regulations and the MHRA’s Managing Medical Devices April 2015 edition.
  • Carryout planned preventative maintenance and performance checks to manufacturer’s specification including electrical safety testing.
  • Effective fault finding and repairs of electrical and electronic medical equipment.
  • Acceptance testing planned maintenance and corrective repairs of medical equipment in accordance with the MHRA and OEM documentation.
  • Respond to emergency calls as a priority.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent level of experience in an appropriate engineering field
  • Evidence of continuing professional development e.g. attendance at training courses (manufacturers and specialist)
Desirable criteria
  • Medical Engineering degree or equivalent
  • Professional membership of a relevant professional body e.g. status of Clinical Technologist under the Health Professionals Council (HPC) or a willingness to work towards this within 12 months of commencing the role

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Electrical / Electronic experience
  • Experience in the maintenance and performance checking of electrical equipment.
Desirable criteria
  • Planned and corrective maintenance experience on: Infusion Pumps, Cardiac Monitors etc
  • Experience within an EBME department or equivalent

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of electronic and electromechanical principles and procedures.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, technical and quality national standards, national and professional guidance
  • Knowledge and understanding of the risks to patients and staff arising from the use of a wide range of medical equipment.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of medical devices
