Job overview

Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust requires a highly motivated, reliable and flexible BANK Maintenance Assistant to work as a key member of the Estates Team. You will play a proactive role within the team, delivering key objectives to meet both departmental and Trust requirements.
The post holder will assist the Estates Directorate to provide a comprehensive and responsive Estate Management Service to all of the Trust’s properties. You will be a hands on maintenance assistant who is able to deliver the full range of duties associated with the post holder’s core craft trade.

Main duties of the job

To carry out day-to-day maintenance checks and repairs on engineering plant, equipment and the building fabric including: basic electrical, mechanical and building works e.g. replacing lamps, repairing nurse call handsets, unblocking sinks, basic plumbing repairs, replacing ceiling tiles, simple joinery and decorating.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Emergency lighting testing.
2. Water quality management planned and reactive maintenance e.g. taking water samples, 
checking water temperatures, recording results.
3. Boiler house and plant room duties e.g. water testing, steam plant checks.
4. Carry out basic electrical, mechanical and building works e.g. replacing lamps, repairing 
nurse call handsets, unblocking sinks, basic plumbing repairs, replacing ceiling tiles, simple 
joinery and decoration.
5. To assist craft persons of all trades in the repair and maintenance of hospital property and 
equipment.
6. Collection of data e.g. utility meter readings.
7. Water softener plant checks including salt deliveries to the areas
8. To assist in the cleanliness and safety of hospital equipment, machinery, tools, vehicles and 
areas.
9. To observe and abide by all safety rules and regulations taking appropriate consideration of 
other hospital staff, patients and visitors.
10. To ensure work is carried out in a professional manner.
11. To be a responsible team member who uses initiative and is flexible to the needs of the 
clients.
12. To undertake training to learn new generic skills in order to fulfil the requirements of the 
department.
13. To understand working practices of the Estates Maintenance Department
14. To become familiar with the operation of plant and equipment throughout the Trust.
15. To carry out other duties not listed here which fall within the post holder’s skill set.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Formal training in Civil Engineering / Building Trade
Desirable criteria
  • Formal Trade Apprenticeship

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Civil Engineering / Building / trades background
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary maintenance workforce ideally within the NHS

Knowledge & Skill

Essential criteria
  • Working on own initiative with minimum supervision Ability to prioritise a demanding workload Fault finding skills of a building nature Ability to communicate with all levels of management, staff, patients and members of the public
Desirable criteria
  • Basic IT skills
