Job overview
This is a full time locum post which will be based at Bedford hospital. The post holder will be joining a group of five other clinical microbiologists with the aim to provide high quality diagnostic microbiology and clinical advisory service to both acute hospitals and general practitioners in Luton & Bedfordshire.
Currently two consultants and a speciality doctor are based on each hospital site. The clinical laboratory is located at the Bedford hospital site and boasts a wide range of services with increasing emphasis on automation and molecular tests.
Bedfordshire hospitals NHS Trust prides itself on the high standards of innovative clinical services it provides which include a level three neonatal intensive care unit, regional centre for bariatric surgery and the recent introduction of robotic surgery.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be part of the senior laboratory management team and be expected to actively participate and support the Clinical lead in the management and the day to day running of the clinical laboratory.
You will be expected to share with your colleagues the daily tasks of results validation, providing clinical and infection control advice to clinical colleagues.
The role has cross site responsibilities to help promote good antimicrobial prescribing in line with Trust guidelines. The Trust employs one full time antimicrobial pharmacist on each hospital site. We are also proud to have the services of a consultant antimicrobial pharmacist who works cross site. In this role you will be expected to take part in ward rounds to review prescribing and engaging with clinical colleagues with a view to influencing prescribing.
The department is keen to promote educational events and engage with teaching and other educational activities to benefit colleagues in the department and the wider Trust.
This position also requires participation in a 1 in 6 category A on call rota which runs from Monday to Sunday.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Medical Degree
- FRCPath or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
- Qualification in the management of antimicrobial stewardship
Registration
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Excellent all round experience of DGH work
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Microbiology
- Knowledge and experience in delivering antimicrobial stewardship
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and experience of infection prevention and control
Personal Circumstances
Essential criteria
- Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on-call emergencies
- Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance
- Satisfactory DBS clearance
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision
