The Paediatric Emergency Department (ED) is excited to announce the introduction of a Play Specialist Healthcare worker on a fixed term contract. This is a new and exciting addition to our newly developed Paediatric ED, that see's on average 26,000 children a year (70 children per day).  The department has a dedicated High Dependency Room, CAMHS  (Child and Mental Health support) Room, dedicated isolation cubicles and waiting area. 

There is opportunities for training and development in this role and the department has dedicated Paediatric Practice Development Nurses to support in this role. 

 

 Job summary 

To undertake therapeutic assessments and devise play programs for children and young people in hospital, according to their individual needs and as part of the overall care plan.
The post holder carries out assigned tasks involving direct care in support of a Registered Nurse to ensure care of infants and children within the unit to promote their health and development and contribute to the effective and efficient day to day running of the Paediatric emergency department.
Ensuring every child has appropriate distraction, pre and post procedural play therapy and appropriate activities during their stay. The role includes working closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team across the Paediatric Emergency Department.

* To plan and implement individual therapeutic play programmes, to include preparation for invasive and non-invasive procedures, distraction therapy and post procedural play.

*To manage children experiencing difficulty in attending a hospital environment, using evidence based practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate therapeutic interventions.

*Ability to use different communication methods to manage sensitive and stressful situation both with children and families.

*Have an excellent understanding of safeguarding and child protection and report concerns via appropriate channels and to senior colleagues.

OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE OF THE POST:
1. To support the nursing team in maintaining a high standard of individualised care according to the infant/child/young person’s needs within a family-centred environment.
2. To maintain accurate patient records and charts.
3. To report any relevant changes in the infant/child’s condition to the senior nursing staff immediately.
4. To assist in meeting the care and development needs of all patients within their care.
5. To use play to assist the child to meet with dehydration and nutrition issues.
6. To encourage parental participation with play and distraction.
7. To accept the guidance and supervision of the senior nursing staff in order to learn and develop.
8. To maintain a high degree of health and safety at all times.
9. To maintain a professional portfolio in line with HPSET recommendations for re-registration, recording learning outcomes from participation in internal and external development opportunities.
10. To participate in teaching and orientating new staff and student on the role of play within the Emergency Department and distraction techniques.
11. To help manage/alleviate fears, anxieties of an emergency department environment i.e. procedures.
12. To organise a supervise play for children appropriate to their age and/or medical condition.
13. To provide emotional support to children and their families.
14. To maintain good knowledge and understanding of religious, cultural and diversity needs.
15. Remains proactive in building relationships, communication skills and therapeutic play to staff, children and families.

  • Achieved grade A-C or Level 4-9 Maths
  • Achieved grade A-C or Level 4-9 English
  • Level 3 childcare or related field qualification

  • Foundation Degree- Health care Play Specialism NNEB/BTEC
  • Registration with HPSET or equivalent
  • Guided imagery training

Experience

  • Extensive experience of working with children and young people (CYP)
  • Experience of undertaking audit
  • Experience of working with disability, special needs – including children with mental health concerns, challenging behaviours and sick children in specialist areas.
