Job overview
Applications are invited for the above full time post for this 660 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This appointment will be made in accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service for Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England) 2002.
This post is a 2 year post in which modular training in some or all aspects of anaesthesia will be offered including General Surgery, Urology, Dental, Major Colorectal Surgery, Intensive Care Unit, Major Head and Neck Surgery, ENT Surgery, Bariatrics and Paediatric Surgery. These will be dependent on the successful applicant’s educational requirements.
Teaching will be provided to prepare for fellowship exams and to support clinical learning.
The post-holder may expect to receive training in Obstetric Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, as well as General Anaesthetic experience, depending on their requirements. The department supports staff who wish to take the final FRCA exams. The post-holder will also be encouraged to participate in audit, research & educational opportunities.
The post-holder will participate in a full-shift rota pattern. This covers Obstetrics, Intensive Care or Emergency Theatre out of hours depending on appointee’s experience & the cover requirement.
In order to be considered applicants must have at least three years’ experience in Anaesthetics.

Medical Training Initiative posts in Anaesthetics
MTI trainees will work alongside UK anaesthetic trainees and duties and responsibilities of the posts include;
- Pre-operative assessment, Anaesthetics and early post-operative care for both routine and emergency surgery patients in and out of hours.
- Providing Obstetrics cover both in hours and out of hours
Providing cover for the Critical Care service both in hours and out of hours including covering cardiac arrests and paediatric resuscitation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
This post will be remunerated as per the Terms & Conditions of Service for NHS Medical & Dental Staff (England) 2002 salary scale according to experience.
The appointee will be allocated an Educational Supervisor who will ensure training /competences are developed. There will be an average of 3 Consultant Supervised lists, equivalent to UK trainees.
Location of duties - Luton and Dunstable Hospital, however, occasional emergencies require medical escort for transfer to specialist units by ambulance.
When not directly supervised, Consultant advice and cover is always available.
Study and Training
- The post is not recognized for postgraduate training.
- Support will be given for exam preparation according to the appointees needs.
- There is weekly academic meeting which the appointee is expected to attend.
- The anaesthetic department has a selection of up-to-date computers allowing access to internet and intranet.
- Study leave allowances are as set out in the Terms and Conditions of Service and are equivalent to those of substantive trainees.
- Assessment within the Luton & Dunstable Hospital is conducted by the Educational Supervisor at least every six months. Career Counselling will be available from the College Tutor.
Hours of duty
- Participation in a 1:8 full shift rota. Duties will be allocated on a weekly basis.
- So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties, the appointee undertakes to deputise for absent colleagues.
- The appointee undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Full General Medical Council registration with a Licence to Practice is required at time of application.

- Eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment
- Completion of foundation 1 and 2 or equivalent
- 3 years specialty training or equivalent in line with GMC standards/good medical practice
Desirable criteria
- Have evidence of current employment in a UKPFO-affiliated foundation programme
Language skills
Essential criteria
- All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
- IELTS with a score of 7.5
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous anaesthetic experience of at least 3 years
- Excellent all round experience of DGH work
- Ability to work independently, but aware of own limitations and know when to seek advice from senior colleagues
Desirable criteria
- Previous anaesthetic experience in paediatric anaesthesia or working with critically ill children in the last 3 years
- Adult advance life support course or equivalent which is valid currently
- Paediatric advance life support course or equivalent which is valid currently
Audit/Research
Essential criteria
- Interest in conducting audit/ QI Programme
- Able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
Desirable criteria
- Participation in research and/or audit cycle
