An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and clinically skilled senior nurse with a strong background in cancer to join our team of Breast Care Specialist Nurses. The post holder will provide expert clinical and supportive care for patients diagnosed with breast disease. They will work with the multi-disciplinary teams and the wider teams in supporting patients throughout their treatment pathway, providing individualised, compassionate and informed patient care.

 

You should possess excellent clinical and communication skills, with an established background in cancer or surgical nursing, be visible and accessible with quality and standards as your priority. You will need to be flexible and resilient in order to cope with the demands of the role.

Main duties of the job

·         To perform an effective key role within the MDT to deliver cancer waiting times targets and pathways communication.

·         To act as a specialist resource for patients and the clinical team by providing comprehensive advice, information, teaching and training both within the Trust and externally.

·         Update own clinical and specialist knowledge. Contribute in audit processes. Undertake, where appropriate, nursing research with published outcomes.

·         Promote excellence in clinical practice, and the setting of quality standards within specialty.

·         Active involvement in the development of the service locally and nationally.

·         Clinical excellence.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Places quality at the heart of practice by delivering evidence based individualised patient care according to patient’s changing health care needs, through holistic needs assessment, (HNA).

·         Uses specialist knowledge and provides specialist advice to ensure effective continuity of care delivery to patients with breast cancer.

·         Demonstrates high level clinical, technical and research skills through breadth and depth of knowledge.

·         Acts as a Keyworker for a clinical caseload, working to coordinate care and provide easy access for ongoing support for patients and carers.

·         Uses advanced communication skills in all aspects of patient assessment, care and support.

·         Assesses people’s information needs and provides relevant information to meet those needs.

·         Enables people to access, identify, appraise and interpret information to facilitate patient choice.

·         Provides clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across service boundaries.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Nurse. • First Level degree in a relevant specialty. • Post graduate qualification in cancer nursing or other appropriate specialty. • Significant demonstrable experience of working within cancer in an acute setting. • Teaching or mentoring qualifications. • Evidence of recent, relevant, and appropriate continuing professional development.
Desirable criteria
  • • Masters degree. • Counselling certificate. • Advanced Communication Skills course.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Extensive experience working within cancer at a senior level. • Experience of leading a team. • Experience of multi-disciplinary team working. • Experience of leading the development of protocols and standards. • Experience of leading audit and evidence of participation in research. • Experience of teaching. • Extensive experience of working autonomously. • Experience of providing support for patients, relatives, and carers.
Desirable criteria
  • • Experience of nurse-led clinics. • Experience in patient advocacy. • Experience of obtaining and using patient feedback.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. • Excellent leadership skills and evidence of leadership role. • Excellent interpersonal skills. • Ability to prioritise and organise own workload. • Computer literate. • Knowledge of current NHS issues including those directly related to the cancer agenda. • Ability to critically analyse and apply research to the clinical setting. • Understanding of the need
