Job overview

We are looking for a Band 7 Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to join Reading  CAMHS, which is part of the wider West Specialist Community Teams (SCT) which cover Wokingham, Reading and Newbury. This post is based at Erlegh House, University of Reading. 

Our SCT Teams are multi-disciplinary teams that deliver treatments to young people in the Reading area who are living with more complex, severe, and enduring mental health problems. As a result, you will find yourself working jointly with other professions such as Children’s Social Care. 

We are keen for clinicians newly qualifying to apply for this post. The ideal clinician will be thoughtful and reflective, and someone who is a team player. We are an experienced team and as a Service we are able to provide a supportive structure and regular supervision to newly qualified members of the team. 

The Reading team is warm, compassionate, and welcoming. You will be provided with a supportive introduction, regular supervision and plenty of in-house training opportunities. We also have our free parking on-site. Caseloads are protected and manageable despite a waitlist for treatment.  

Staff wellbeing and development is a priority for the team, alongside clinical and management supervision, there is dedicated time for reflective case discussion and team formulation, wellbeing activities and support. 

Main duties of the job

  • To complete risk reviews and update safety and care plans for patients and give advice. 

  • Provide comprehensive assessments and therapeutic interventions to young people and their families, as appropriate.   

  • Provide care coordination for young people open to the Service.   

  • Independently manage an appropriately sized caseload. 

  • Use supervision effectively. 

  • To work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team as well as patients, carers, family members and internal and external agencies 

  • Work autonomously within professional guidelines and exercise. responsibility for the systematic governance of psychological practice.   

  • Maintain own continuing professional development and contribute to team professional development initiatives. 

  • To consult with members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure effective and safe care planning for young people.  

  • To identify and report any safeguarding issues as they may arise.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Masters or Doctoral level qualification or recognised equivalent qualification:- a) Qualified Clinical or Counselling Psychologist as accredited by the BPS or HCPC and registered with HCPC or Qualified Psychotherapist registered with professional body i.e. ACP approved Child Psychotherapist or Qualified Systemic Family Therapist Masters level UKCP registered
  • Or Professional qualification as below with additional recognised training in delivering therapeutic interventions:- a) Registered Mental Health Nurse (NMC). b) Occupational Therapy degree level qualification and registered with HCPC. c) Registered Social Worker with relevant social work qualification. d) Other Health professional with relevant post graduate qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Current registration with an approved professional regulatory body such as HCPC or ACP.
  • Additional post-qualification training equivalent to a minimum of 50 hours, supervision within a specific modality directly related to clinical practice including case presentations, group supervision, attendance of teaching programmes, courses etc.
  • A supervisory qualification in the relevant professional discipline or substantial supervision experience.
  • Professional qualification in CBT i.e. diploma or equivalent Accreditation with BABCP or ability to work towards the requirements

Knowledge Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the health and social care systems and operating frameworks, clinical observations and the Mental Health Act and other legal frameworks
  • Advanced interpersonal, influencing, communication, observation and reporting skills. Ability to engage and communication with a wide range of professionals, staff and other service stakeholders
  • Experience of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and multi-agency environment
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to analyse situations and be able to make the right decisions
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the issues surrounding child development and the impact it can have on meeting the five Every Child Matters outcomes The Children’s Act 1989 and 2004 and The Mental Health Act 1983 and 2007
  • Able to empathise, be supportive and sensitive to the needs of others as well as being able to cope with distressing circumstances
  • Experience of managing complex caseloads and applying a range of interventions
  • Ability to work to timescales and comfortably cope in pressurised situations, applying practical problem solving skills in everyday and complex situations
  • Competent IT skills and the ability to navigate around various systems and software packages (such as outlook, databases e.g. RiO, MS office and the internet). Good keyboard skills.
  • Able to work flexibly change to flexible hour’s pattern as required and the ability to travel independently between locations to fulfil the requirements of the position.
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively in a team, reprioritising work and that of others work to reflect changing needs.
  • Ability to manage clinical risk and understanding of child safeguarding procedures.
