Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the South East Op Courage Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service as a Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Social Worker. This is a one year fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and you will deliver the service across Berkshire with the occasional need to support colleagues in Hampshire and Buckinghamshire. 
You will provide specialist assessment and formulation for veterans and transitioning military personnel presenting with complex mental health, substance misuse and social care issues. You will deliver psycho-educational packages as well referring on to relevant services/agencies and offering advice and consultation on clients’ psychological care to multidisciplinary mental health staff, third-sector agencies and other, non-professional carers. This is a busy service and your self-care is important to us. Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will have clinical responsibility for a case load as specified by the Service Manager or Team Lead.
  • The post holder will be responsible for delivering specific mental health interventions within their scope of practice and will work with the multidisciplinary team to deliver the plan of care in line with the NICE and other relevant standards and guidelines.
  • The post holder will be responsible for devising high quality holistic mental health assessments and risk assessments/safety plans/crisis prevention plans with people on their caseload.
  • The post holder will have leadership skills and as an experienced mental health practitioner will direct and supervise junior staff and/or students within their area of responsibility
  • To assertively engage with clients, striving at all times to develop good therapeutic relationships.
  • To establish and maintain good liaison with colleagues working in emotional wellbeing and mental health services in the locality including veterans’ charities and other 3rd sector organisations

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The “must haves” for this role:

1.    Skills to offer structured and individualised interventions to meet the Veteran’s underlying needs
2.    Ability to undertake comprehensive assessment and formulation of clinical presentation and risk and identify appropriate care plans for ongoing care. 
3.    Ability to provide multi-agency consultation/liaison, which involves attending, contributing to, and where appropriate, chair multi-agency meetings.

Education/Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Registration with a recognised approved body
  • Relevant degree level qualification e.g.: Registered Mental Health Nurse (NMC) or Occupational Therapy degree level qualification and registered with HPCP or Registered Social Worker with relevant social work qualification
  • Plus: additional relevant experience/ specialist training/, short courses to diploma level

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and multi-agency environment
  • Experience of managing complex caseloads (substance misuse, traumatised people, PTSD) and applying a range of evidence based interventions (risk assessments and safety planning)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Competent IT skills and the ability to navigate around various systems and software packages (such as outlook, databases e.g. RiO, MS office and the internet).
  • Ability to work autonomously and effectively in a team, reprioritising work and that of others work to reflect changing needs.
  • Ability to manage clinical risk and understanding of current government policies concerning the provision of mental health care
