Job overview

This is a substantive 10PA post for a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. 

 

Please note the Simulation date will be the 29/1/25 and the interview date will be 12/2/25.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support clinical and managerial leadership within the Gastroenterology service with the present consultants. This role will focus on delivering endoscopy procedures and outpatient clinics for 2WW, routine, urgent and specialist gastroenterology patients. An office base with administrative support will be provided. There is a desire for this post holder to deliver clinics and endoscopy at the Reading site and West Berkshire Community Hospital, and the option to have clinics in Townlands Memorial Hospital, Bracknell Healthspace, West Berkshire and Reading as required.

Current service needs is towards candidates with specialist interests or skills in IBD, intestinal failure, EMR, bowel cancer screening or ERCP & EUS endoscopy. The Royal Berkshire Hospital Gastroenterology department delivers outpatients, endoscopy and inpatient service.  In addition to general gastroenterology, we provide specialist inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, hepatology and viral hepatitis clinics run jointly with specialist nurses whilst delivering cancer performance standard for upper and lower gastrointestinal services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • 1:12 Gastroenterology inpatient cover at Royal Berkshire Hospital
  • GI bleed on call
  • 2-3 clinics per week
  • 2-3 endoscopy lists per week (including service and training lists)
  • Vetting and validating endoscopy, GP and ward referrals
  • Involvement in the Rapid Diagnostic Centre programme supporting Upper GI & Colorectal 2WW referrals
  • You will be expected to develop the gastroenterology service in collaboration with consultant colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • This post is for a substantive member of the Consultant team focused on core Gastroenterology outpatient and endoscopy procedures.
  • There are many opportunities to drive the service forward and we are looking for a “can-do” appointee to seek out these improvement.
  • Support registrars and nurses in training during clinics and endoscopy where appropriate
  • Active participation in monthly departmental clinical governance meetings and specialty business meetings
  • Weekly attendance at Consultant team meetings
  • Educational supervision of registrars, nurse specialists and physician associates as required

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC/eligible for registration within 6 months of CCST in (Speciality) at interview date
  • Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded

Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Fully trained in gastroenterology & all aspects of general gastroenterology patient care
  • Endoscopy procedures – UGI and LGI
  • Previous responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
