The funding for this course comes from NHSE and it is not yet confirmed, if successful at interview once funding is confirmed then a contracted offer will be done.

Applications are invited from NMC registered adult nurses who wish to train as midwives. This 2 year Masters programme is provided jointly with the University of West London (UWL) and the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust
The aim of this course is to prepare safe, competent and confident midwives who can positively contribute to the health of childbearing women, people, newborn infants and their families. They will gain the knowledge, skills and behaviours to meet the future challenges of a rapidly evolving healthcare system. The curriculum reflects contemporary maternity provision, influential political drivers and current NHS demands. It recognises midwifery as both an art and science and as such, fundamental biological and scientific concepts are integrated within the course ensuring the development of communication and interpersonal skills, resilience and emotional intelligence.

This role is for NMC registered nurses to complete a midwifery programme over two years with a local university. It will include a combination of work-based and academic learning.
They will have assigned placements within the RBFT Maternity Unit across all clinical areas to obtain the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to meet the learning outcomes for the NMC register as a Midwife.
The post holder will:
- Be allocated maternity placements in the hospital and in the community setting to gain the knowledge and experience to meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
- Be required to achieve the standards as set out by the NMC and HEI and on completion of the programme register as a midwife.
- Take every opportunity to develop their own practice and expand their own general and specialist midwifery skills.
- Display effective communication and work as a role model by adhering to the Trust expected behaviours and values.
- Be required to commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the educational programme within the contract period.
- Act with integrity and professionalism upholding the reputation of the trust and midwifery profession at all times.
- Work within risk management/ occupational health legislation and Trust’s procedures for safe working practices.
- Demonstrates the Trust’s values at all times and is aware of national and local objectives for maternity care

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Managerial
- Works as an effective team member. Understands the importance of team working in the delivery of high quality care. Demonstrates excellent two-way communication with women, their families and the maternity team
- Actively promotes diversity, including race diversity, and to maintaining an environment where there is equal opportunity and commitment to anti-discriminatory, anti-racist and anti-stereotyping practices
- Works with team to maintain high standards of cleanliness in the clinical area. Assist with non-clinical activities to ensure the smooth running of the service
- Supports the Senior Midwives and Matron to ensure the service practices within Data Protection/ Confidentiality/ Caldicott principles
Clinical and Technical
- Understands the importance of the woman as the centre of the health care system. Demonstrates that he/ she consult and involves women in decisions about their care and wellbeing. Demonstrates understanding of fundamental legal practices related to consent and the prevention of abuse
- Under the supervision of a midwife is able to plan and implement holistic, culturally sensitive, respectful, non-judgemental care for women with a wide range of care needs. Undertakes other care practices as directed by the Midwife, but is able to carry out routine care duties at own discretion. Practices in accordance with the Trust’s protocols and guidelines
- Undertakes specific clinical skills under the supervision of a midwife as appropriate to the clinical area
- Is able to support the woman with infant feeding and provide immediate care of newborn following the birth. Is able to provide instruction to the mother on how to hand express if necessary.
- Displays analytical and judgement skills, within own sphere of practice, related to women’s comfort, mobility, support needs. Uses initiative when responding to changes in the woman or baby’s condition
- Displays excellent two way communication with women, families and colleagues. Is able to overcome barriers to understanding when the woman’s first language is not English or has a learning or hearing difficulty. Demonstrate appropriate assertiveness and ability to challenge others when the rights of women and others may be infringe
- Participates in recording observations under the indirect supervision of the midwife, ensuring these are accurately recorded and reported.
