Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to lead our Antenatal and Newborn Screening Programme within our Maternity  team . They will work closely with our Antenatal and Newborn Screening  Lead Midwife and individual clinical Leads to ensure that the Trust meets National screening targets which are set, and monitored by NHS England - Key Performance Indicators.  
The successful applicant will be direct line manager for the Newborn Hearing Screening team, and failsafe officer.
They will monitor and provide regular performance reports both the the local and national teams. They will be responsible for reporting, investigating any serious incidents or near miss incidents ensuring that any  necessary changes to practice or training needs are identified and rectified quickly and efficiently.

 

Main duties of the job

Have a comprehensive knowledge of the national screening programs to ensure that the RBFT local protocols and procedures meet all national guidance. Operationally responsible for quality assurance of all the screening programs in maternity. 

 

Implement, evaluate and present outcomes of the NHS England regional recommended programme improvements during Quality Assurance visits from the Screening Quality Assurance Service (SQAS). 

 

Collate information regarding all screening programmes, chair the regional screening meeting with NHS England and local maternity team. 

  

Organise audits and evaluation of relevant pathways in particular around health inequalities. 

  

Liaise with clinical leads on each screening programme to ensure quality assurance in each programme meets standards and targets. 

 

Collate data, produce and present formal reports and KPIs for both local and National bodies within specified timeframes. . 

 

Report, investigate and respond to all incidents or ‘near misses’ as per Trust policy and National Screening Policy.

 

Ensure that all women and new-borns that are eligible for screening programmes are identified and referred appropriately to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment. 

  

Utilise and develop tools to assess and audit the efficiency of service provision and quality standards in screening.

The Maternity unit deliver just under 5000 babies a year. We provide care for a diverse population across West Berkshire.  Part of our maternity strategy is equity in access and outcomes tackling the multiple dimensions that affect local healthcare inequalities. 

The unit comprises of a delivery suite, midwife led birth centre, postnatal and antenatal wards, outpatients and Day Assessment Unit.  We have a very successful home birth service,  specialist teams to support vulnerable women and continuity of care teams.

We have developed a 'seeking sanctuary ' service which is a mutidisciplinary approach to providing care to pregnant women seeking sanctuary in the UK and their families. This service was presented as good practice in the NHS three year delivery plan.

We have an established  joint led services for rainbow, bereavement, diabetes, fetal medicine, pre term birth.

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level in a subject related to healthcare or biomedical sciences
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised teaching/mentoring qualification with evidence of teaching experience.

Experience

  • Demonstrates experience in service development and implementation
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of National screening and extensive knowledge of current national guidelines.
