Job overview

Band 6 Nuclear Medicine Radiographer / Technologist

**We would also consider appointing a suitable candidate on a lower grade until all appropriate training and registration are completed.**

The Nuclear Medicine Department at RBFT is a Physics-led clinical patient-facing service, and is part of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate.

We installed a new SPECT-CT scanner in 2023 and we are preparing for another new scanner in 2025.

The Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department is a co-Directorate alongside the Berkshire Cancer Centre with a friendly and supportive leadership team.

In the most recent NHS National Staff Survey, MPCE had the highest staff satisfaction of all the Trust Directorates.

We actively support personal development and engagement in activities such as outreach and work experience visits from students.

Main duties of the job

The main duty is to act as a nuclear medicine operator.

The team rotate through all aspects of the Department, from vetting (under protocol), dispensing, injecting, scanning and image processing. You would also be involved in equipment QA checks. There are also regular reporting sessions with the radiologists that you could become involved in.

We also do GFR tests, and some radionuclide therapies. In 2025-26 we are planning to expand the service to include Cardiac Stress Testing studies.

Team members play a part in all aspects of the Department, including looking after our patients, their appointments, queries etc., and all that is involved in working with radioactive materials, from ordering through to disposal.

Working for our organisation

Reading sits on the river Thames and is served by great road and rail links to London, Oxford and Southampton. With excellent leisure and shopping facilities, and a thriving cultural scene, Reading is a wonderful place to live, work and play and provides excellent facilities for families, including some of the best state and private schools in the UK.

The current hospital is a mix of beautiful old buildings and newer sections and refurbished areas. The Trust has made big steps to provide a supportive space for everyone, including the recent opening of our staff wellness centre. This contains a small gym, relaxation rooms and some fitness and wellness classes.

Looking further into the future, the Trust “Building Berkshire Together” is part of the New Hospitals Programme with a significant rebuild of the hospital being planned.
