Job overview
Works within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team, undertaking caseload management, and making professionally autonomous decision for which he / she is solely accountable.
The ANP demonstrates highly developed levels of critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning ability. He /she utilises expert clinical skills, which are not normally undertaken by nurses. These skills are developed by performing comprehensive health assessment, and initiating care and treatment modalities through agreed protocols.
Participates in the Senior House Officer duty rota.
Provides specialist, interdisciplinary education and training for other staff and students
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be a 1st level registered practitioner. They will have excellent communication skills, and be able to liaise with patients and their families in planning their healthcare needs. They will be expected to provide evidence of their ongoing continuing professional development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
ANNP post:
- Manages a patient caseload. Conducts physical examinations. Analyses, interprets history, presenting symptoms, physical findings and diagnostic information to develop appropriate differential diagnoses.
- Prioritises health problems and intervenes appropriately, including the initiation of effective emergency care.
- Employs appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic regimes with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence and efficacy.
- Formulates an action plan based on scientific rationale, evidence based standards and clinical practice guidelines and protocols.
- Demonstrates advanced critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision making process.
- Orders, may perform and interprets common screening and diagnostic tests.
- Evaluates results of interventions, using accepted outcome criteria, revises the plan of care accordingly, and consults / refers to medical staff when needed.
- Provides guidance and counselling to parents/ guardians/ carers regarding the management of health/ illness conditions.
- Supports the parents/ guardian’s/ carers control over decision making , assessing and developing jointly determined and mutually acceptable plan of care.
- Demonstrates excellent personal communication. Is able to communicate complex, sensitive information to families and carers effectively.

Education / Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse (Pt 1/12), Registered Midwife, RSCN (Pt 8)
- First Level Healthcare related degree (HEI 6) or equivalent
- Qualified in speciality
Desirable criteria
- Mentoring, Facilitating Workplace Learning or Clinical Supervision Qualification
- Leadership course / qualification
- Advanced History Taking and Clinical Assessment module
Experience
Essential criteria
- Recent experience of management ability and leadership
- Experience of clinical governance practices, audit, service evaluation or quality improvement in clinical practice
Desirable criteria
- Experience of change management
- Recent experience in role of ANNP in Neonatal Intensive care Unit
