This role is based primarily at the Royal Berkshire Bracknell Healthspace, with additional rotation to other sites including the Radiology departments of the Royal Berkshire Hospital, West Berkshire Community Hospital and Townlands Memorial Hospital, as required.

Successful applicants for this Plain Film/General Band 6 Senior Radiographer post will have a minimum of 18 months’ post qualification experience and will be required to rotate through all areas of the department, with the exception of Ultrasound and MRI.  There is an intention to develop a Plain Film/CT rotation in the future.

As a progressive teaching department for radiographers we have established links to universities and actively encourage CPD and role extension, with support available to pursue academic courses and develop your career within a supportive and friendly environment. Our department offers excellent training and development opportunities with funding available for a variety of courses. We currently have staff undertaking post graduate training in Ultrasound, Plain Film reporting, Mammography, Fluoroscopy PG cert reporting (barium swallow), the Henley Business Management degree apprenticeship, as well as attendance on a variety of study days.

Applicants must be adaptable and be prepared to work evenings, nights and weekends as part of a seven-day service delivery and also to work at satellite units.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment.

Our Plain Film radiography team provides imaging for our patients through many pathways. The department boasts 10 general x-ray rooms including 2 in a dedicated orthopaedic department and 3 within a busy and exciting A&E unit. All rooms have full DR capability. We provide fluoroscopy services in support of: ERCP studies, Pain Clinic procedures, emergency and elective theatre, and Interventional Radiology . Our 6 mobile DR machines bring x-ray imaging to critically unwell patients across the hospital site.

Our busy Radiology department carries out a wide range of general and specialist examinations. We have recently been awarded the title ‘University Department of Radiology’ for our involvement in research and education through the University of Reading. Radiology is actively engaged with and working towards accreditation with the Quality Standards for Imaging which sets out national quality criteria for imaging services. The department actively encourages all staff to participate in quality improvement and audit and to support the service with achieving accreditation.

At our heart we are a local hospital that works with NHS and social care partners to provide excellent healthcare services for over 500,000 people who currently live in our catchment area. We employ more than 5,500 staff from 39 different nationalities and deliver care from a network of facilities across sites in Bracknell, Henley-on-Thames, Reading, Thatcham and Windsor. We also provide specialist hospital services beyond the county’s borders.

  • The post holder will act as a State Registered Radiographer and will participate in the provision of multi-modality imaging services to a diversity of patient presentations in a range of clinical environments.
  • The post holder will provide an excellent standard of radiographic imaging, technique, and patient positioning to deliver a high quality of patient care.
  • They will work to a consistently high standard and ensure radiation doses are kept to a minimum using the ALARP principle and dose reduction factors.
  • The post holder will assess and justify referrals under IRR17, IR(ME)R 2017, following practitioner guidelines. Includes the assessment of complex and/or acute cases.
  • They will make autonomous decisions regarding the appropriateness of examinations as an aid to clinical diagnosis.
  • They will follow established examination protocols and liaise, as required, with Consultant Radiologists regarding optimum technique.
  • The post holder will possess specialist knowledge and experience as appropriate to grade, and be able to function as a role model and will participate in the supervision, training and support of more junior staff.
  • They will exercise autonomy within professional and managerial boundaries and be responsible for the prioritisation and organisation of own work activities in response to clinical and service needs.
  • The post holder will use Electronic Patient Records (EPR) and the Radiology Information System (RIS) for patient registration, ordering and scheduling. They will be responsible for ensuring accurate patient records, including radiation dose and exposure factors.
  • They will use the Picture Archive & Communication System (PACS) to ensure optimum image quality.
  • They will participate in the Quality Assurance equipment testing programme.
  • The post is based primarily in the Radiology Department of the Royal
    Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, with rotation to satellite units at West Berkshire Community Hospital, Townlands Memorial Hospital and the Royal Berkshire Healthspace in Bracknell.
  • The post holder will participate in the provision of 24/7 services; to include weekend and evening working.
  • Services are provided to hospital clinicians, general practitioners and other healthcare professionals including physiotherapists. The post holder will be required to liaise effectively with these referrers, patients, and their representatives.
