Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team and develop to become a Trainee Respiratory Physiologist.
You will train to perform a range of respiratory function investigations under the supervision of the Respiratory Physiologists. You will also gain skills in performing basic respiratory diagnostic procedures and treatment provision in our sleep disordered breathing clinics and to train as an apprentice to achieve to achieve a level 6 BSc Healthcare Science degree.
This position is supported by an apprenticeship levy for cardio-respiratory science. If appropriate, this can be used for further educational needs and/or professional qualifications with protected study time and mentoring support from the physiology team.

Main duties of the job
To assist in the provision of diagnostic assessment services in Respiratory Physiology and the therapeutic monitoring of patients with lung disease and/or sleep disordered breathing.
To assist in the performance of respiratory physiological measurements in accordance with ARTP/BTS National Guidelines and Departmental Standards.
To perform spirometry (measurement of dynamic flows and volumes) in accordance with ARTP/BTS National Guidelines and Departmental Standards.
To assist in the performance of diagnostic tests to nationally recognised standards for accuracy and quality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To perform spirometry (measurement of dynamic flows and volumes) in accordance with ARTP/BTS National Guidelines and Departmental Standards.
- To assist in the performance of the following investigations under the supervision of the Clinical Respiratory Physiologists:
- Field exercise tests (6 minute walk test; shuttle test; 6 minute step exercise test).
- Ambulatory oxygen assessment.
- Measurement of respiratory muscle strength (MIP/MEP; SNIP tests; postural spirometry).
- To assist in the performance of hypoxic inhalation tests (fitness to fly).
- To assist in the performance of histamine challenge tests.
- To perform diagnostic tests in patients who have suspected sleep related breathing disorders.
- To assist in the review of CPAP therapy for patients with diagnosed Sleep Apnoea who are on CPAP.
- To perform tests of fraction exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO).

Education
Essential criteria
- Minimum 5 GCSE (9-4/A-C grade or equivalent) Including English, Maths and Science
- Good IT skills
Desirable criteria
- A-Levels or equivalent in a scientific subject
Experience
Essential criteria

- Measurement or instrumentation experience

- Clinical or healthcare related experience
