This is for a full-time Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with a specialist interest in Trauma and Hip and Knee Arthroplasty at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful applicant will support the current delivery of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Service, including contribution to the development of these services at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients, and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.

The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust, Orthopaedic Department is to become a leader in the field of Orthopaedic management and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as team work, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

The simulation date will be held on 22nd October 2024  and the interview date will be held on the  7th November 2024.

  • The successful applicant will be expected to share with the present staff, the large clinical load referred from a range of sources. There is a general trauma commitment sharing a weekday and weekend on-calls with the existing teams.
  • The postholder will participate in all further training and educational opportunities for junior medical/nursing staff, general practice vocational trainees, general practitioners and medical students.
  • There is a trauma meeting every morning starting at 07:45. There is a monthly clinical governance meeting. There are weekly post-graduate teaching sessions and designated SHO training sessions. 
  • Participate actively and enthusiastically in the clinical governance, teaching and management activities of the department.
  • Record all absence from the Trust using Department and Trust processes; provide this record at annual job plan review; and provide cross cover for colleagues’ leave when necessary.
  • Comply with all department and Trust policies, procedures and guidelines, and work providing care in line with national standards.
  • Take personal responsibility for attending all mandatory training and in particular adhere to and maintain accountability for Infection Prevention and Control practice.
  • Participate in appropriate Continuing Professional Development activities; complete annual appraisal and revalidation requirements; work to achieve objectives set at annual appraisal and job plan review.

The Trauma and Orthopaedics Department at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust provides a comprehensive Trauma and Orthopaedic Service in all aspects of emergency and elective surgery both for adults and children.

We offer a wide variety of routine and complex orthopaedic procedures for fractures and musculoskeletal problems across the following subspecialties:

  • Hip & knee
  • Foot & ankle
  • Hand & wrist
  • Shoulder & elbow
  • Spine
  • Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma
  • Adult Trauma
  • Deformity correction

We form part of the Thames Valley Trauma Network and work in partnership with neighboring Trusts across the Thames Valley to provide the best possible standard of care to our patients. Patients that require sarcoma and major/poly trauma care may be treated at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre or the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, which is the regional specialist-commissioned Orthopaedic and Major Trauma provider.

We are a training department, welcoming and investing in student nurses, therapists, junior doctors and regularly host work experience students across all specialisms. We also offer six highly respected and sought after fellowships, as well as offering training opportunities across all clinical and administrative disciplines.
