Would you like to join a team of dietitians working as part of a Specialist Learning Disability community dietetic service? Are you keen to develop your skills and support our team to deliver excellent patient care in the right place and at the right time? If so, we have a vacancy in our well Service and is looking for someone like you to build on your existing skills.

Main duties of the job

To provide specialist clinical assessment and ongoing Dietetic management of adults with learning disabilities. This may include people with challenging complex health needs.

To provide therapeutic care and health promotional /educational activities in a range of venues across the City including clinics, nursing homes, residential homes, clients’ own homes, day service venues and respite/short.

To act as a source of specialist clinical advice and guidance for clients’ families, carers and the multi-disciplinary team.

To raise nutritional awareness/Healthy Lifestyles and promote the benefits of Nutrition and Dietetic Services with respect to people with a learning disability within the organisation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Birmingham Community Nutrition has embraced new ways of working to keep all our patients and staff safe during the current pandemic, including socially distanced, “Covid-secure” office space, virtual consultations via telephone or video, robust risk assessments and PPE for any clinically necessary face to face contacts. Benefits of working for Birmingham Community Nutrition include free parking at all community venues, excellent access to IT equipment to work remotely, up to date office facilities and comprehensive admin support dedicated to the service.

To maintain a clinical caseload within specialist areas of Learning Disabilities.

To undertake comprehensive specialist nutritional assessments and treatment of clients, diagnosing nutritionally related disorders and being alert to symptoms and signs of wider system disease.

To respond appropriately to frequent requests for specialist Dietetic support which include those for people in complex clinical and social situations which require detailed analysis and decision-making.

To plan and deliver individualised nutritional care plans based on comprehensive specialist assessment of needs and knowledge of evidence based practice, modifying the care plans as required.

To negotiate and agree dietary or nutritional goals with individual patients and/or their carers using motivational interviewing, counselling and cognitive behaviour therapy tools as applicable. This may include identifying individual barriers to change and helping clients and carers to manage them.

Directing referrals for specialist medical opinion and mainstream services (including Primary Care Dietetics services) where appropriate.

Being alert to Adult Protection and consent issues for Adults with a Learning Disability.

Qualifications / training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Dietitian with current HCPC registration
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Degree or equivalent in Dietetics
Desirable criteria
  • Post Graduate training or equivalent relevant experience.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant Experience in nutritional support and weight management.
  • Experience of MDT working.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within a learning disability service.
  • Experience of working in a community setting
  • Experience of developing, implementing and evaluating projects and audits.
  • Experience of supervising staff
  • Experience of student training
