Job overview

The Digital Technology Services (DTS) IT Security & Asset Support Officer  will work within the Technical Services Team to help maintain and promote all aspects of information security across the organisation.  This is a 6 month secondment role, the role will also assist in maintaining a detailed inventory of all Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (BCHC) IT software and hardware assets and applying the information gathered in making the best decisions concerning IT-related purchases and redistribution for the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • The deployment of regular monthly and ad-hoc critical software updates and patches to end-point devices and reporting on the success levels.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Certero Software Asset Management (SAM) system,
  • Ensuring the asset inventory is managed accurately, whereby all new devices are added to the system and decommissioned devices are correctly archived from the system and the associated software licenses released.  
  • Monitoring and managing IT assets and inventory, utilising the SAM application (including asset allocation) for the distribution and disposal of  their lifecycle.  
  • Responsible for the production of reports and charts to aid decision making by senior DTS staff on the future requirements of the Trust’s hardware and software assets.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. The post-holder will support the management of information security related risks within the Trust.
  2. Support the Information Security Risk Assessments of systems and keeping information and systems secure.
  3. Working with different departments across the organisation in relation to cyber risk.
  4. Work with external organisations in relation to cyber risk management.
  5. Support any cyber risk investigations including security breaches and incidents.
  6. Support the monitoring of different risks and mitigating solutions in place.
  7. The post holder will provide advice on IT software and hardware estate and operational matters.
  8. Perform daily and long term operational management of BCHC hardware and software assets.  This will include reviews of asset against hardware and software specifications and licensing allocation.
  9. Continued focus on asset management and the importance of cyber security through the hardware and software asset life cycle.
  10. Support the remediation of any assets with hardware or software discrepancies to meet the required cyber security and software requirements for systems using the Certero system to automatically un-install software and reporting on the successful completion of any remediation activity.
  11. Establish and maintain documentation of procedures, processes and reports concerning IT security and asset management and support the implementation of such procedures and processes across the Digital Technology Services Department.
  12. Assist with effective management of the Certero SAM application and that the content collated is maintained. Work with system suppliers to ensure that the system remains fully patched and up-to-date.
  13. Assist with the implementation and deployment strategy of desktop computer and laptop patch management and upgrades to the software applications and technologies, including regular monthly updates (such as the monthly Microsoft security updates) to all 5,000 Trust computers, ad-hoc urgent cyber security updates and any specific project related software installations or updates.
  14. Assist with providing any data updates required to enable the Trust to feedback to NHS England on the success on any critical software updates required by CareCERT notifications in line with the requirements of NHS England.
  15. Support Project Management Teams and digital projects, identifying cyber risks and data protection considerations for new initiatives.
  16. Regularly uses computer software to develop and create complex reports, documents and spreadsheets.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree level education in an IT related subject or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant experience in an IT Security and Asset support role/ relevant management experience
Desirable criteria
  • GCHQ (Government Communications Headquarters) Certified Cyber Security Awareness or equivalent
  • IT Asset Management Certification (ITAM) or equivalent

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of National Cyber Security Centre and cyber risks in general
  • Understanding Cyber Security and threats of analytical tools and processes
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Certero Software Asset Management software
  • Knowledge and understanding of the IT Asset Management life cycle and the key attributes of the processes required to maintain an hardware and software asset inventory
