Main duties of the job

The postholder will be expected to work all shifts, over a 7-day period, working early and late shifts. 

The post is within HMP Birmingahm, which is a male prison, you will be required to support the registered nurses delivering primary healthcare to the prison population .

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will work as part of an integrated team under the supervision of the management team within   Primary Care. They will be accountable for the delivery of care to the population of the prison and will rotate onto the Inpatient Ward (Ward 1), Reception and Primary Care.

They will carry out assigned tasks involving direct care, under the direction of a Registered Nurse.    

Supporting new and less experienced staff

Maintaining an awareness of budgetary constraints and using resources effectively. Conduct the monthly stock take, ordering and stock rotation

Qualifications / training

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Health related subject or equivalent.
  • Evidence of literacy/numeracy skills (GCSE or equivalent
  • Be willing to undertake competency based training with annual updates as minimum.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with adults with complex health needs.
  • Willingness to work in health and care and prison environment with adults with complex care needs.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision in MDT (once competencies achieved)

Skills/knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to provide nursing care sensitively, taking into account the client’s culture, beliefs and wishes.
  • Awareness of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
  • Competent IT skills.
  • Competent working within a team setting and to be able to work within the community or prison setting.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the needs of a multicultural, socially diverse population.

  • Able to demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of individuals from diverse social and cultural groups.
