We are delighted to be expanding our established nursing team within our friendly and forward thinking Neurodevelopmental Pathway, which includes Autism (ASD) assessment and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Services.

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and committed Nurses who will work closely with our Autism and ADHD teams to participate in safe and effective assessments for our Children, Young People and their families.

You will be expected to liaise with the wider system across health, education and social care to offer the best possible support to families of children with suspected ASD & ADHD.

To make effective use of our virtual and mobile working technology and IT systems, you will also have good IT skills.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the neurodevelopmental pathway team aimed at improving the care of children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD) across the city, both pre and post diagnosis.

The nurse led service will demand skills in child and family centred care, with experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside medical and other health, educational and voluntary services. 

The post holder will be supervised by the ADHD Nursing - Team Leader.  This will maximise professional development and reflective practice and help in dealing with difficult issues that arise.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Work closely with the members of the neurodevelopmental pathway team in developing, implementing, and monitoring services provided to children, young people and their families.
  2. Be a key member of the ADHD multidisciplinary team, working collaboratively with Consultant Paediatricians and other health professionals.
  3. Work autonomously across Birmingham, taking the lead in preliminary assessments of new referrals using the agreed assessment tools and analysis of the resulting information.  Undertake and record observations within schools, clinics, and home settings.
  4. To act as an Advanced Nurse Prescriber for ADHD related medicines, in line with NMC, NICE and national guidelines around safe prescribing.
  5. Implement a family centred care approach, which captures the voice of the child and promotes involvement in the decision-making process.
  6. Work closely with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive inclusive and expert assessment of children referred with symptoms and comorbidities based upon appropriate use, interpretation, and integrations of complex data from a variety of sources, including psychological assessments, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations as well as interviews with the young people and their families.
  7. Be the first point of contact for queries, giving advice and signposting to outside agencies in supporting children, young people, their families/carers, schools, and other professionals, on a rota basis.
  8. Work with and liaise with parents and carers to resolve any complaints or concerns at local level before escalating to team leader.
  9. Work in line with the NMC Code of Conduct, NMC Standards and Proficiencies and Trust guidelines.
  10. Prescribe effectively and safely under a Clinical Management Plan, acknowledging own limitations and scope of practise.
  11. Maintain relevant pharmaceutical knowledge, critically appraise, and apply information in practise.
  12. Participate in and use National Prescribing Centre Competency framework to undertake regular audit and review of prescribing practise and medicines management.
  13. Work within Trust policies that impact upon non -medical prescribing practise.
  14. Exercise independent or supplementary prescribing rights using guidelines and protocols.
  15. Work with children and parents/carers to encourage uptake of medication and behaviour management programmes using a variety of communication strategies both verbal and written, to overcome possible barriers to understanding.
  16. Provide direct expert nursing judgement and treatment interventions based on highly developed skills as well as knowledge regarding clinical management and educational management of the children and young people with ADHD.
  17. Work closely with families, schools, and other agencies, using negotiation skills to encourage implementation of behaviour management programmes and administration of medicine.
  18. Liaise with external services such as CAMHS, Social Care and Health and education to provide a holistic approach to care.
  19. Work with the ADHD team lead in the design, development, and implementation of a rolling programme of parent education. Delivered both in groups and individually in a range of settings.  The post holder will use a range of training approaches and communication styles to deliver complex information which meets individual needs and to overcome possible barriers to understanding.
  20. Undertake risk assessments and risk management for individual children, young people and families in accordance with clinical harms criteria.
  21. Use a range of computer programmes to analyse assessment tools and ensure patient administration systems are maintained and used proficiently throughout the team.
  22. Effectively manage ongoing care of children diagnosed with ADHD.
  23. Using the care pathway framework to continue the collection of activity and outcomes as part of clinical governance.
  24. Be aware of child protection policies, taking appropriate action where concerns are identified and the need to access ongoing safeguarding and clinical supervision and support in this area.
  25. To coordinate patient transition from team caseload to adult ADHD services, ensuring continuity of care.
  26. Utilise highly developed interpersonal skills to develop excellent working relations with all parties Involved, including young people and their families, so that effective communication is achieved.
  27. Work within scope of practice and competencies to meet caseload/ service user/community needs.
  28. Maintain contemporaneous clinical records in line with NMC guidelines and trust Clinical records Policy and attend mandatory training.
  29. Ensure that you and junior staff within the team have access to regular child protection supervision. 

 

Management and Leadership Responsibilities

  1. Provide clinical leadership, consultation, support, and supervision to other members of the ADHD service and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  2. Influence and contribute to the delivery of clinical governance and quality improvement agenda within the service.
  3. Represent the team at multiagency or professional meetings as required and to participate in case conferences where appropriate.
  4. To participate in regular audit of the service and participate in research projects as appropriate to promote and implement evidence-based practice.
  5. To assist in the induction programme for new staff as a mentor, so that new staff are aware of the role.
  6. Contribute to review and implementation of Trust policies and procedures in relation to the ADHD service.
  7. Escalate operational or staffing concerns to Team Leader, Operational Manager or Head of Service.

 

Educational and Development

  1. Accountability to maintain professional development and maintain professional registration alongside requirements for NMC revalidation.
  2. Access regular clinical supervision from a medical mentor.
  3. Access continuing professional development opportunities relating to non-medical prescribing role.
  4. Provide a high level of skills and competencies and work towards development of areas of clinical expertise within the field of ADHD, complimenting other members of the team.
  5. Identify own learning needs and be responsible for own continuing professional development.
  6. Maintain and update professional knowledge and skills in areas of practice.
  7. Undertake mandatory training in line with Trust Policy and attend updates and study days as appropriate to the post.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse BSc (Hons)Level 1 RGN or Equivalent
  • Evidence of continuous professional development within the last two years
  • Independent/ Supplementary prescriber (V300) to prescribe medication for ADHD diagnosed patients on team caseload
Desirable criteria
  • ENB 998 or equivalent
