Band 3 Special School Nursing Assistant

To assist the Special School Nursing Service in providing nursing care under the guidance of a registered nurse.
To work as part of a team supporting the Special School Nursing service to deliver a high standard of care to the child/young person.
Undertake a range of duties to assist and support the Special School Nurse to carry out health screening, health promotion and other health related tasks.

To assist with nursing care including some clinical procedures as set out in the Care Plan and following appropriate training.
Undertake growth screening / new starter screening / Blood pressure monitoring with school aged children after training according to Trust policy.
To assist in the organisation and running of medical sessions and other clinics including acting as chaperone.
To assist pupils, where appropriate and encourage self-care and achievement of independence.
To perform basic assessments, treatments, procedures and therapeutic interventions as delegated and under the direction of the Special School Nurse.
To undertake aspects of nursing care (e.g. personal care; enteral feeding support; basic wound care) as delegated and under the direction of the Special School Nurse.
To report progress of patients and changes in condition to the appropriate person.
To understand the use and care of the patient specific equipment, and maintain a safe environment at all times, ensuring any concerns are reported to the nurse in charge.
To ensure accurate documentation of care as directed by qualified staff within the nursing care plan.
To develop clinical competency and skills through the completion of competency based training, and to maintain skills through regular re-assessment and training.
To access and participate in appropriate safeguarding children & adult training and to be aware of own responsibilities regarding safeguarding C/YP & adults.

Undertake appropriate action when concerns, e.g. child protection issues, are identified, reporting to the school nurse and other relevant professionals and accurately recording issues/actions.
To access and participate in appropriate safeguarding children & adult training and to be aware of own responsibilities regarding safeguarding C/YP & adults.
To work using own initiative within Special Schools under minimal supervision following a period of supervised practice.
To share responsibilities with other team members for the ordering of equipment and for recording levels of stock.
To participate in meetings to ensure effective communication is maintained.
To participate in audits as necessary to postholders own work.
To be aware of the procedure for reporting incidents and potential complaints to the Nursing Care Co-ordinator / Deputy.
