An exciting opportunity has arisen to join an established team of Community Children’s Nurses in Birmingham. This is a city wide service that offers specialist nursing support to children & families with a variety of complex physical health needs.

We provide clinical interventions to children within their own homes, schools and other community locations. The service operates seven days a week and also provides an out of hours ‘on-call’ service.

If you are an experienced Children’s Nurse with excellent clinical skills, have advanced communication abilities you may be who we are looking for to join our busy team. This post will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop rewarding therapeutic relationships with children & families in a community setting.

You will be required to work in conjunction with the Children’s Rapid Response Service whose aim is to prevent a hospital admission and the Children’s Palliative Care Team in supporting parents, carers and children with life limiting conditions and in the terminal phase.  

The post holder will be responsible for a defined caseload of children delivering high quality nursing care according to agreed standards which are set and monitored.

  1. Work in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Practice and Scope of Professional Practice.  Professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all activities.
  2. Provide comprehensive evidence based and skilled nursing care to children within their own home or other community settings.
  3. Provide health education information to the child and family, to promote a healthy lifestyle and where appropriate address public health issues.
  4. Participate in teaching packages to families, carers and other professionals to ensure evidence based care is safely delivered.
  5. Undertake home risk assessments.
  6. Obtain informed consent from children, parents and carers before undertaking care.
  7. Maintain clear and contemporaneous records. Ensure information is obtained and recorded before undertaking care.     
  8. Liaise and work in collaboration with acute services, primary healthcare team and other services as necessary.
  9. Provide a flexible service to accommodate the working environment.
  10. Travel to visit clients within the Birmingham boundaries.
  11. Comply with NMC Code of Conduct and standards, ensuring a professional attitude is maintained at all times.
  12. To work independently within BCHC guidelines and policies.

Education

  1. Maintain and update knowledge and skills in relation to the post.
  2. To maintain own professional development in line with NMC requirements and attend mandatory training identified by the organisation and NMC.
  3. Participate in the teaching and mentorship of staff.
  4. Participate in research and audit relevant to the service.

Management and Leadership Responsibilities

  1. Maintain standards and ensure clinical governance is central to the function of the service.
  2. To identify and advise the Team Leader or senior nurse/manager of any circumstances that give rise for concern.

Qualifications

  • RSCN/ or RN Child Branch
  • Evidence of recent post basic clinical training and commitment to on-going training.

Experience

  • Evidence of multi-disciplinary working

Skills/ Knowledge

  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of NMC Code of Conduct and Scope of professional Practice.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up to date clinical practice.
  • Current clinical skills or willingness to develop to include: Enteral Feeding / Central line access / Tracheostomy care.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge and application of up to date clinical trends and practice and those concerning paediatric nursing.
  • Knowledge of clinical audit and its relationship to research.
  • Ability to manage workload and caseload with Team Leader supervision.
  • Evidence of assessment skills and use of the nursing process and nursing models.

  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills appropriate to the requirements of the post.

  • Provide evidence of time and resource management.
